I am a graphic designer working in an office with less than 10 computers and I do a bit of web design. We are based on a college network with an extremely fast connection. i recently got my manager to agree to buy me a server to host websites. I have setup web servers before and that should be no problem again when i get this.

I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas how else I could utilise this server besides web hosting? Specs of machine are below. Thanks!

    PowerEdge SC430 3.2ghz
    1Gb RAM
    2 x 160Gb HD
    Windows Server 2003

I will only be using the web hosting for our office only although you can access it from the internet. I was wondering about using the server to manage a domain so i can manage the 10 computers in our office. not sure if its worth while as we are already sharing a network in the college with 1,000s of computers.

    Well, is up to you.
My advice is not to change your network configuration since you have already everyhting up and running.
But if you want you can create one domain for your network but it will give some work to do, because you may need to access to network of your college with 1,000s of computers.
It is a great machine and if you want you can do a lot of things.
You can create one file server there for your material and your can set up the dns service or your internal web sites. It is not easy to use that server to host public web content and i do not know if you want to do it.
Do you have everything on your network? dhcp, dns, wins, internet access, printer server, file server, WSUS server.
There are many things to putt on the network to dynamically administer the clients.

To be honest i only got it to host my own website but i thought i could use it for other uses besides hosting. We have 10 machines in our office and i was wondering if i could manage them from this server by using a domain or something. i do not have rights/access to the entire network in our college, only the department i work in. I have never used windows server and my machine is being delivered tomorrow.

    thanks for the advice!
