When I type in cmd or cmd.exe in the run box I get the following.
    C:\documents and settings\ my name>

What does it take to get just the drive letter?

    Thanks,
    Schmelz

What exactly are you trying to do?
are you trying to get a prompt that goes to root "C:\ "

You can simpily type "c:" and hit enter

No - you have it wrong there .....

At C:\documents and settings\ my name> type in cd\ this will get you to the root directory.

At the C:\> prompt type in D: to get to the root of Drive D and so on.

    CMD prompt changes

If you are really asking how to CHANGE the prompt format then you will probably have to create a new PROMPT registry entry in -->

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
    Environment]

Look here for further instructions -->

added: I also just noticed that my X-Setup Pro will allow modifying the command prompt. There are likely other utilities, also.

    Good Luck

Right click the shortcut- go to properties (or icon in the start menu) and under start enter C:\
I also use the Cmdhere Powertoy for XP so you can rightclick different folders and start the command.
