I am looking to purchase backup software that is a bit more robust than what comes bundled with Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? (I hope it is OK to ask for your opinions and experiences with different apps)

My servers both have DDS4 tape drives. However, I want to move away from tapes. I could either backup the servers to a 250 GB external hard drive or use Iomega's new REV drive. The REV drive is like a Zip of steroids - it uses removable 35 GB hard disks. I can fit a complete backup on one 35 GB disk.

One server is strictly a file server. The other Windows 2000 server is a web server that runs a .NET application with a SQL 2000 database. Since the web app and SQL are always on and open, I will need a solution that can back up open files.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

When XP obsoleted the "choice" command, my batch files for backups became worthless. I was directed to SyncBack via a post on this board.

There are both free and $20 versions. It will do scheduled backups and sychronizations.

Its interesting to note how many of those programs will do a full system
backup as opposed to a "data" backup only.

I've been looking for a good, reliable full systems backup (except norton) to
fill in until Acronis gets up-to-date with 64-bit addressing but havent found
    one that appeals to me.

Mr. Chip--My very limited experience is that you will get a backup program with the new backup media you buy. I find that it (in my case, Dantz Retrospect for a Western Digital USB external hard drive) runs much faster (like at least 300MB per minute) than say Norton Ghost which I also have. I do not know if this has to do with better tweaking of the backup program for the drive or some other factor.
Both Ghost and Dantz allow you to back up any or all files you chose.

I'm backing up three NTs & one 2k server onto external hard drives. I found some pretty decent software that will definitely backup opened files. I've been using it for 2 weeks and have been satisfied so far. I've tried about 10 others and have ran into problems with all but this one.

There are some good customizable filters as well as encryption available. Anywhoooo.....the software is about $100. There is a demo but will only backup open files that are 1mb or less.

*EDIT* Oh yea...I purchased the 2brightsparks product mentioned above but it wouldn't work for NT, only NTFS for 2k, XP & greater. I loved it though & will use it for other stuff.
