    I have a scanner that I have been using on my machine for a while now, but I just updated it to windows XP and have moved the scanner over to another machine that has win98 on it but for some reason it does not see the scanner at all. I have installed the drivers and programs for the scanner and connected it to the computer and hucked up the power. But for some unknow reason it just dosen't want to see that the scanner is connected to the machine.

    Any suggestions?

    Why did you move the Scannner ?
    No XP drivers ?
    Which version of 98 ? I am not 100% sure but it might make a difference.
    Is the Scanner USB or what ?

    Did you do a clean install of XP ( format and start over ) or did you upgrade over 98 ?

    Sorry about that I should have explained more.

    The scanner would no longer work with XP because there are no XP drivers for it and the company is no longer in business. The OS is win 98 SE and it pluges into the printer port.

    And when I installed XP on the other machine I did do a clean install. It just did not like the scanner at all. It would lockup the computer if I tried to run the software that came with it. And I would have to do a restart.

    So since I already knew that it would run on a 98 machine I just moved it to that machine. Only it didn't work. It just dose not want to see that the scanner is connected. I know it is a good connection because I was runing a printer from it for a while.

    Did you follow the sequence of powering up, installing drivers, etc. from the scanner's instruction manual?
    Have you rebooted since installing everything and having the scanner plugged in and powered up?
    Does the scanner show in Device Manager? When you click on Device Manager Properties for the scanner, does it show as operating properly?
    If things still are not working, you might uninstall from Device Manager and go through the whole install sequence again.
    I understand this is not a USB connected Scanner.

    About the Scanner I understand now why you had to move it.

    Did you remove the Printer ? Hardware, software and driver Wise ?

    Yes I did remove the printer softeare and drivers since they are not being used anymore. And no the scanner is not showing up in the device manager and yes I did follow the installation instructions when installing the scanner and software. Including restarting the computer after install.

    That is why it has me so puzzled on what may be the problem. I even uninstalled everything and reinstalled it a couple of times and it did not make any difference.

    cwdlmdd--Got me!! Short of wiggling the connection cable (and making sure it is firmly anchored at both ends or substituting another cable), or finding a friend with a Win98 PC who will let you try to install that scanner on his/her machine, I suspect you may be out of luck. (If you had success on the friend's PC, that would imply the problem is not with the scanner but with your Win98PC.)
    Was the PC on which the scanner was formerly installed running the same version of Win98? And I assume you have the installation CD and have used it. You cannot rely on Win98 to supply drivers.

    I have checked the cables also and they are connected about as tite as I can get them and I do have another cable that I tried also but still no luck.

    I guess it is just time to buy a new scanner. I don't know what else to do.

    Thanks For the help!

    Buy the way when I installed the software and drivers from the Cd they seemed to install ok. But When I uninstalled them and tried to install them through the Add New hardware progam. I clicked on the have disk button and it could not find the installation point on the cd.

    Just thought that was a little strange.

    Anyway Thanks again!

    Hi

    don't give up quite yet!

    check the settings for the printer port, parallel ports can work in different modes

    some modes won't work with a scanner, although printers work OK

    first off: check using device manager:
    - View Devices by Type
    - look down to Ports (COM & LPT)

    look at what is indicated for the port

    if it says "Printer Port (LPT1)" or similar this is probably the cause of your troubles, because this mode is unidirectional - it only sends data outwards

    to use a scanner you need a bidirectional mode because you are trying to accept data back into the computer from the scanner.

    there are various bidirectional modes, EPP & ECP are the most common

    you should be able to see this with device manager, it would say something like "ECP Printer Port (LPT1) "

    ==

    the mode that the port operates in is generally set up in the BIOS somewhere. Different types of BIOS ! have different places to alter these settings

    You're looking for something along the lines of "Parallel Port Mode" - I've got it under "Integrated Peripherals" on one machine here (Award BIOS), in case that helps

    If you can find it, try ECP as first guess for the parallel port mode (to get a scanner working) EPP is probably OK also.

    Avoid SPP, is no good (unidirectional)

    ==

    If the machine is OEM (particularly Compaq) you may be stuck with needing setup disk to alter this.

    ==

    Windows should "learn" the port mode by itself next time it starts up. But you may well have to uninstall/reinstall the scanner software :( sorry

    HTH

    best wishes, HJ.
