hello, im working on a friends laptop and everytime we go to windows update to update the computer, it will BSOD on reboot. here are the updates we are trying to apply:

    1) KB835732 (Windows XP)
    2) KB828741 (Windows XP)
    3) KB834707 (IE 6)
    4) 329834 (Windows XP)
    5) Q329048 (Windows XP)
    6) Q323255 (Windows XP)
    7) Q329390 (Windows XP)
    8) Q329115 (Windows XP)
    9) 329170 (Windows XP)
    10) 811630 (Windows XP)
    11) 810577 (Windows XP)
    12) Q329441 (Windows XP)
    13) 817606 (Windows XP)

dont really know what is happening, but the BSOD is caused by the system trying to modify win32k.sys, which apparently its not allowed to do. googled some stuff about the BSOD and its relation to win32k.sys, and all the results i found had to do with changing video settings and such, which isn't a thing we are changing on this laptop. help?

    EDIT:

trying to isolate the update in question doesn't do anything, it seems all the updates cause this problem. also, didn't realize that he had automatic updates turned on, so all these updates are already downloaded. dunno if that bit of information helps or not.

It might help to know which XP version and what SP is installed.

    Meanwhile
    - Open My Computer and right-click on the system drive (probably C: ) then on properties. Click the button for Disk Cleanup and let it run. If cleanup hasn't been done before or not recently, this may take a while to locate files to be deleted. Once that is done, OK the deletion and let it run. Also may take a good while and may appear stalled. It isn't.
    - Open a browser window and if IE, click on tools, internet options, then delete all history files, all temporary internet files, all cookies.
    - Close all open windows then click on start->run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and click OK. Let the system file checker replace any missing or damaged system files.
    - Right click on the My Computer icon, left click on Manage, open the disk defragmenter and defrag the drive.
    - Click on start->run and key in CMD then OK. Once the new window opens, key in
    Code:
    chkdsk c: /f
and press ENTER. When told it can't do the deed just now, answer Yes to doing it at next reboot.
    - Reboot and see if updates will work. Unless you are very low on drive space or have something else torn up, it should.

Thanks for the update. We may never need to know home vs. pro but so many things are done differently depending on version that it is good info to have.

Hopefully the cleanup stuff will solve your problem but if not, we can at least start troubleshooting with a known clean system.

well, something fixed it. chkdsk found no errors, and i can only attribute the working system to running sfc. however, sfc didn't ever tell me if it made any changes, it only scanned and then finished. if it was anything i did, that would be it. thanks a lot.

If you check your event logs you will find details of any actions SFC took.

Glad to hear you are back in business.
