I need a followup on a previous thread describing a workaround by Thomas back in January please.

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=472&highlight=remote+access

I am trying to use a Win 98 machine to remotely assist a host Win XP machine. Following the instructions on that thread, I installed the Win XP Remote Desktop files on my 98 machine, but then I found out that I could go only so far with Thomas' instructions because the XP machine I am working with is the Home version, the instructions in his thread were for the Professional version.

So, I’m asking if it is possible and how to perform a remote assistance from the 98 to the XPHome machine. I’ve gotten this far:

The novice XP’s request for assistance arrived at the expert 98 machine by email. on the 98 machine, I tried to open the attached-file request, and cannot find a program to associate (open) the file with. I tried associating it with the new MSTSC.EXE which is now on the 98 machine, but all that does is launch a connection window.

How can I proceed from here? What *.exe opens this attachment file: *.MsrcIncident

Pleeeease help! I’m setting up this XP for a newbie who will be needing remote assistance from my 98 machine which will soon be in another state. I purchased pcAnywhere, but after installing it, I found that Version 10.0 not only diables XP's remote features, but itself does not function on XP. (Symantec's tech support acknowledged the problem, and advised an upgrade which will cost an additional $99 so I uninstalled it.) What a lovely simple feature XP's system restore is! But I do digress ...

I feel like I’m so close, I’m hoping someone will have the magic word for me! TIA "“

XP Home doesn't have the Remote Desktop feature - only Pro. You can only use XP Home (or any Windows version) to connect to a Remote Desktop session running on XP Pro (or Windows Terminal Services).

Upgrade to Pro or use third-party software (pcAnywhere, RAdmin, VNC, etc.). Will you be connecting directly using modems or over the Internet?

    duh!

I just realized I don't have Windows Messenger (actually MSN msgr) on my machine.

I'm going to download it, install it and see if that does the trick. Shall post back!

    Will Net Meeting work?

Well, Unixfan, we must have cross-posted, but you’re right.

I tried downloading & installing MSN msgr for XP on the 98 machine, said my OS needed the earlier version. Tried downloading and installing MSN msgr for earlier OS "“ didn’t open the *.msrcincident file. Tried copying over the msmsgs.exe and msmsgsin.exe from the XP machine "“ no go. I knew that XP-home did not have the Remote Desktop feature, but I also knew that it DID have the Remote Assistance feature. What that meant wasn’t clear, but I knew I didn’t need the full features of Remote Desktop, just the Remote Assistance.

It looks like an XP can receive Remote Assistance from earlier operating systems only if it is the Pro version. It also looks like XP-home is just another one of the "earlier operating systems" -- can only offer remote assitance to an XP Pro, but cannot receive remote assistance from other operating systems.

In answer to your now-moot question above, the connection was going to be over the internet.

Would NetMeeting allow remote access and control of a host, do you think? and are the versions of 98 and XP compatible? This is such a rude disappointment with XP and PCAW!

not done yet, but getting discouraged!
