I was neck deep into a HD problem when i saw a small window asking me to chose
OK or Close. No indication of what it was so i closed it. Under that small
window was another, smaller, window. That window also picked up the mouse
click and closed. I only got a quick glimps of it, something about firefox, before it closed.

I believe it had something to do with firefox because after things had calmed
down, i saw a new icon on the desktop about installing firefox 1.0.6. Since
i dont want to update yet, i deleted the icon.

Now when i click on firefox (1.0.4) i get the message - "The program must close
to allow a previous installation attewmpt to complete. Please restart ".

And firefox dont open. I just got firefox working the way i want it to. Is there
anyway to get out of this incomplete installation? A hard boot wont get rid of
it, i tried. So something in firefox has been changed...

    thanks,
    savagcl

What operating sytem are you using? If it's Windows XP, you could try system restore. Let us know.

Can appreciate and understand your preference to hold off installing 1.0.6 until you have your current computer issues resolved. Keep in mind, 1.0.6 is a "more secure, improved" version of the program. In all but the most usual circumstances, if a problem occurs, it is a damaged profile. If I was in this situation, would just keep a backed up copy of this profile (contains all of your preferences) and allow 1.0.6 to install. If you have a problem later on, just go back to your backed up profile. Bottom line, if you have a good profile, you are good to go.

    savagcl,

Ensure that Firefox is closed, and that you have a backup of your Firefox Profiles folder.

    Next:

Go to the Firefox program installation folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    Delete the xpicleanup.exe file
    Firefox should then start

Then go to your Tools | Options | Web Features setting
Remove the tick beside: "Allow websites to install software "

By disabling this setting you won't have software starting an install without your permission.

    .

Sorry, i'm using WinXP, Home, SP2

Didnt find the file xpicleanup.exe in firefox.
    Did a search and found:

    xpicleanup.DAT in C:\PF\Mozilla Firefox
    xpicleanup.exe in C:\PFmozilla.org\Mozilla
    xpicleanup.exe in C:\PF\Common files\mozilla.org\GRE

I also looked through the Docs\settings and found
    C:\D-S\Owner\ApplData\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\@#$%^78\xpti.dat
    but no xpicleanup.

    thanks,

    Clif,
first of all, there is a check mark in Tools|Options|Advanced which may have given you the choice to check for updates, as well as install them. 1.0.6 will check, but not install, so there may have been a difference between 1.0.4 and 1.0.6. I have a xpicleanup.exe file in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
And, I have nine other such files in all the programs I have, from NS7.2, Mozilla, Thunderbird, etc., and two more in the GRE folders of NS7.2 and Moz1.7.11. I c. My little dog fell asleep looking for files with xpinstall. He just woke up, and, couldn't see any xpicleanup.dat file.
I suggest that you go to the hard drive, and look for the file in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox, look in the bottom row. and, do these deletions, after making sure that FF is not on , sort of.

Here is all the X files (nothing to do with the TV show) and their locations.

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox contains:
    xpcom.dll
    xpcom_compat.dll
    xpicleanup.dat
    xpistub.dll

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.5_2004121708 contains:
    xpcom.dll
    xpcom_compat.dll
    xpicleanup.exe
    xpistub.dll

    C:\Docs-Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\57atqnf1.default contains:
    xpti.dat

I see one now (dont know why the search didnt find it).
Since its in the mozilla folder (not firefox) i'll just move it and try.
