.dat files are data storage files and are laid out in machine code or binary code (all zeros and ones). Not really designed to be read other than by the program that uses them.

There are some viewers available. Some are only for a single sort of file like the index.dat and others claim to be general .dat file viewers. Maybe.

If you do a google search for .dat file viewers you will find quite a few options and a number of them are free so you can see if anything suits your needs.

You only posted yesterday - please be patient. We are all volunteers here and those expert in analysing HJT logs - a lengthy process, are overwhelmed by the sheer number of them. Your log will be looked at in due course.

leeblob--Not my business, but as Newt has said, .dat files are really not meant to be opened. Unless you are very knowledgeable, leave them alone.

um...is there any chance that these .dat files are actually video? i know that many VCDs (especially out of the Asian market) tends to label the mpgs on the cd as .dat. You could try opening them in WMP or whatever else you use to watch video.

conee--I have learned something. You are right.
Here is a list of all the files that use the .dat file type
    http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=dat&goButton=Go
As leeblob can see, various different programs may be needed to open the .dat files that are not just data files.
If leeblob posts the source of the files, maybe you can help him decide what program should be associated with them to allow them to be viewed.
