Last week we had a thunderstorm and all of our power went out
    for about 2 hours.

When everything came back up, I noticed the wireless router
(Linksys 54G something) was not working properly. The IP address
of my computer was now the IP address of the cable modem and
my wife's computer was not logging into the network at all.

I reset the modem and router several times and loaded the router's install CD
and the wizard from CD kept saying router could not find
    the internet connection.

I checked the cable from the modem to the router by plugging
the modem directly into my computer and it was working fine.

The fact that my computer had the IP address of the cable modem
when attached through the router led me to believe the router was
    now working as a switch.

My best guess is something happened to the port the cable modem plugs
into on the router although the internet light lights up when I plug the
cable modem into the router in the uplink (internet) port.

So, I then decided to use the router as switch and dug out my old
Winproxy software and now all the computers are back on the internet
and LAN attached to the router.

The wireless card even works setting it up manaully to see the network
and the proxy server on my main computer.

One issue I have is that I cannot bring up the router software.
I usually just type http://192.168.0.1 into any browser connected
to the router and I get the configuration screen. But now this does
not work. It just says "page cannot be displayed ".

Can anyone think of any other way of bring up that confugration screen?

My router is almost 2 years old and out of warranty. So I'm stuck for now
uing it as a wiress switch (access point?) until I can afford a new router.

More than likely the storm did some unrepairable damage but we will play along and assume it didn't.

First, unless you changed it, the Linksys interface is 192.168.1.1 (not 0.1)

Second you will have to have your PC on the same subnet to see it.

Maybe the power surge turned off DHCP so configure you NIC to a static number of 192.168.1.10 and see if you can see 192.168.1.1

    Hope this helps!

You might try contacting your ISP and see if the cable modem needs to be reset.

    Thanx for all the help.

Yes, I was aware the address was acutaully 192.168.1.1. I am typing this
from work so I am relying on memory.

But, what I didn't have set was the Default Gateway. I should have
realized I needed that set (slapping forehead).

Guess I have been relying on the DHCP server too long.

Right after the storm, I had my nic and my wife's nic set to "automatically obtain IP address (from DHCP server)" and this was not working. My
address was 0.0.0.0 and her's was the IP address of the cable modem.
Both of our system were plugged into the router as it had been for
the last year and a half.

Yesterday I sat down at her computer and manually changed the
IP address to 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.1. Now I
was able to bring up the router setup page.

Once that came up, it seemed to "jump start" the router.

The DHCP server started working again and I was able to plug
my cable modem into the router and all is working again.

    Thanx again.
