Machine 1. W2K. Old HP 820 cse and Okidata 591 printers attached.

Machine 2. NT4 sp6a. Modem and fax program attached.

Shares the Oki printer just fine, but the HP printer does not. I have tried a number of different methods to get Machine 2 to recognize the HP printer but it just refuses to.

The installation starts out with a message that some files are needed on the NT machine. These files seem to be on the W2K cd. I get thru the process to the point that NT4 asks for sRGB.ICM on the W2K CD. However, I get a message that I "do not have permission to open this file." (I am the administrator.)

W2K does not use this file, instead it uses sRGB Color Space Profile.ICM.

HP site says everything I need is on the W2K cd.

    Is this a hopeless cause?

Been a while since I messed with Win2k and NT but I think in the advanced sharing properties of the 2k machine you have to add the NT drivers.

Just went and looked at a 2k machine.

Sharing Properties of the printer click on additional drivers.

By this post thread being in the Networking forum I have to assume that you are running a Local Area Network. Using a Router or Switch maybe.

If you happen to be using a Crossover Cable leave me out of this. Because you will need to continue using sharing.

If this is the case do yourself a favor and get a Printer that plugs diirectly to the Router or Switch. It them becomes a STANDALONE to each machine and does not require one special machine to be on.

I myself have an HP 5850 plugged into my Router along with the three machines. One of the BEST investments I ever made. It is

I also still have an HP 5550 hooked to this machine and set to be Shared. But it very seldom gets used. Because if this machine gets turned off the Printer is not available.

A clarification and a little more information.

Yes, this is a LAN using an Ethernet hub.

On the NT machine: "Add printer" gives this message.

"The server on which the printer resides does not have a suitable HP Deskjet 820Cse driver installed. Click OK if you wish to install the driver on your local machine. "

I assume the "the server" refers to the W2K machine and the "local machine" refers to the NT machine.

Go thru the process I described earlier and the install borks at the .icm file.

    Scott,

I have tried numerous times to add addtional drivers to the W2K machine. The process seems to be complete, but when I re-open the "additional drivers" window it indicates that the drivers were not installed. During the process, I am asked for files from the W2k "server" cd. I have W2k "professional ". Maybe this is a reason or not installing?

At one time I had somewhat the same problem with the HP5550. I did get it fixed for awhile but then it came back. That is when I went to a Network Printer. It has saved me A LOT of aggrevation.

But also you are dealing with two OSs that I KNOW NOTHING about.

Also I have a Router installed which the 5550 did not seem to get along with. ( addressing problem I think )

But with the 5580, the Router and everything set to Auto Address all is just fine. And it makes no difference in the order I turn machines on as the Printer is always left on. ( unless a kid messing around turns it off )

You are assuming that NT4 is using the Win2K drivers.

Some Win2K driver will work on NT4 but most do not.

What you need to do is first make sure you are sharing the
    printer in the Win2K machine.

Then, on the NT machine you need to install the drivers
from the printer CD and tell it it's a local printer. You may
get some messages saying the printer cannot be found
but you can still complete the install.

Once the install is done, go back into the printer properties under
WinNT and it should say where the printer is printing from. It most likely
    will say LPT1.

In that box, put in the "\\" address to the printer.

    Now it should work.

Is this the "Location" box under the "General " tab of Printer Properties? If so, putting a location doesn't seem to make any difference.

Unchecking the LPT1 in "Ports" tab causes "One port must be checked" message.

Comparing the HP and OKI printer properties on the NT machine finds that for the OKI, Location is blank, there is no port listed for OKI, Share tab listed as "not shared" and there is a tab "device settings ". (The OKI printer works just fine.)

The HP Location is local, LPT1 checked, share tab "nor shared ", no device setting tab.

    I remain confused.

I recall doing this on a Win95 system way back when it was attached to a networked NT printer.

    Try this

On the computer you installed the local printer, delete the printer and reboot. Then, go into printer setup and install a network printer. Point out to the shared printer. When it asks to install drivers, the drivers should now be on your computer and select the local drivers. Do not install the W2K drivers.

That didn't work. Still can't get the NT machine to recognize the printer on the W2K machine.

    I give up.

    ---------------------

The printer prints fine on the W2K machine???

Have you tried using the NT driver directly from the HP website??

Have you tried temporarily attaching the printer directly to the NT
machine and see if you can print that way??

You may have some registry issues causing it not to print...if it
won't print locally it won't print over the network.

You also may want to totally uninstall ALL drivers on your NT system
for that printer. That also may be causing a problem.

    http://www.jsifaq.com/subj/tip4500/rh4559.htm

Here is an FAQ how to do that.

Finally, you are using Windows and sometimes things won't work.
In the end, if everything else fails, I do the old format/re-install and
    start over from scratch.

The printer works on the W2K machine.

    Yes.

    Yes, it prints okay.

    Hmmm....

    Done that. Didn't help.

    I can believe that statement.

As an aside, the only reason that I am still running NT on the machine is because W2K will not satisfactorily install on this machine. Some sort of really odd video conflict causes lockup during boot or lockup when resolution is set beyond the base 60hz/640/480 default. I have tried a number of different generation nvidea cards and W2k will not accept any of them. They all worked as expected with NT.

Okay, so when connected locally the printer will print
but over the network it will not.

And I am assuming when you installed the network printer
it did see the printer connected to the W2K machine over
    the network.

    Hmmmmmm....

Yeah, possibly when NT tried to install the W2K driver over the
network it could have messed up some settings in Windows.

The last suggestion I have, is to try to install a different driver
that will work with your printer.

After some research, it looks like the HP 842C will work with
your printer and give you most if not all the same functionalilty.

You might want to download the HP 842C NT drivers off the HP website,
install the drivers, then setup a NEW networked printer and point
to the printer over the nework on the W2K machine and use the
    local drivers for the 842C.

After that, I am out of ideas besides doing an FFR.
    (Fdisk, Format. Re-install)

    Don't you LOVE Windows?

The printer works from the W2K machine. Will not print from NT machine. Does not show up in the list of NT printers. I can manually find it on the network, but get the message that "drivers are not installed, do I want to install them? ".

    FFR ain't gonna happen.

I will try using the 842C drivers. It may be a few days before I can do it. I'll report back then.

    Thanks

    Report on trying 842c drivers.

    Tried 842c drivers. No improvement.
