For some reason my 6 in 1 card reader software has disappeared (not even in add/remove) so I tried to re-install from the cd and I got a pop-up message telling me to remove the old driver. This must be done before proceeding. I can find no instructions about removing drivers. Anyone have an idea ? :

Win 98? Specific drivers/software are not usually required for XP.

    Try this ....

If the reader is built in plug a card in, if not plug in a card and plug in the reader. Device Manager > Disk Drives - expand > right click on card > Properties > Drivers. This will detail the drivers in use - if they are not MS drivers note the location, navigate there, copy the drivers to another location and then rename the drivers in the original location to, say, old...

Then try a reinstall of the reader.

If still no joy rename the drivers back to the original name.

Alternatively, if software other than drivers is involved is there a folder in Program Files relating to the reader?

If you are using XP there is a method of showing all uninstallable programs in Add/Remove by editing sysoc.inf It is possible that if there is an uninstall program for the reader it has got 'lost'.

Thanks Pete - still using 98se and can find no reference to 6 in 1 anywhere. have tried Start/find and several different entries with no success so far. Nothing under program files either. I tried re-start/reinstall and still nothing.

Open up the software CD in Windows Explorer and see if you can locate the driver file - may be an *.inf file. Then you can go looking in Windows for it.

It is unlikely to be referred to as a 6 in 1 in Windows.

find 6 in 1 card reader

I found this: c/program files/generic/6in1 card reader driver v-17 and deleted same. Then re-start and tried to re-install from disc. Still no success.

Look in C:\Windows\system for the driver - probably a *.vxd file - be careful.

Pete - I have to leave now but I will wander through windows\system later. I did quickly run *.vxd through Find and come up with nothing. Thanks again, I.ll report later.

Well I'm still confused but after following Pete's suggestions and rooting around myself I decided to start/restart AGAIN and remarkably the card reader is working. One of Ms's mysteries? :)

Glad to hear it's working again - that's the 'Wonder of Windows' :D, but there is a reason somewhere.
