Disk defragmenter on XP home edition

Whenever I run disk defragmenter I get an error message (when it has finished). It seems to defragment some of my hard disk and some files are not defragmented. Since I dont know how defragmenter works and what it does, I am wondering if I should be concerned about this. I get a lengend when defragmenter starts - assigning red for fragmented files - blue for contiguous files - green for unmovable files and white as free space. I can understand that unmovable files cannot be defragmented but if I let the program complete, show me the error message and then if I run it again, there are still framented files (coloured red) I cannot understand this. Could someone please help or at least guide me? This is a copy of the error report I recieve:

    Hello Nickynoo,

Do you run defrag in safe mode? I do, if nothing else, it speeds the process up, and it may make a difference in how well it does.

FWIW, XP auto defrags on a regular basis if the Task Schedular service is enabled, cutting down on the frequency of manual defrags I have to run.

If you want something stronger then look into Diskeeper: http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp?ad=overture1&apid=PPS0001053

    Two free defragmenters:

Pete's post reminded me that XP's defragger is a Diskeeper version written for MS.

    Regards - Charles

Nickynoo--Defragmenting is needed much less frequently in newer PC's with WinXP and large hard drives. When you first open Defrag, click the Analyze button. Windows will tell you if Defragmenting is needed. If not, forget about running Defrag.
    What does Defragmenter do?
    See here under Defragmenting
    http://www.smartcomputing.com/techsupport/detail.aspx?guid=&ErrorID=23072
As you can see you are putting files dealing with one program closer together on the hard drive so that access is faster.

About the error message, many possibilities.
    http://www.google.com/search?source...2004-31,GGLD:en&q=some+files+not+defragmented
If the PC runs OK, especially the programs that could not be defragmented, maybe just forget about the message. May having the files closer together is not needed.
Or you can run Defrag again and see if there is any improvement.
