I recently learned that Windows XP Media Center Edition can now be purchased without buying a whole new system. Retailers like newegg.com are selling this Microsoft Operating System directly to consumers. The catch is, the software must be sold with a "qualifying item of hardware" which, in most cases, is as small as a cable. My only question is, what are the possible pitfalls of installing this OS on an existing computer system? Has anyone out there done it successfully?

I'm pretty sure that's not the case. See: How to Buy a Media Center PC

It would be pretty useless on a "standard" PC...

    Sorry, Arie

I hate to disagree with you, but the sale of Windows XP MCE as an alternative to XP Home and XP Pro is now a reality and, at least two customer reviews from Newegg customers successfully installed the OS on their existing PCs. (I haven't had time to read the rest of the reviews). Here is the description of the OS for sale at Newegg.com:
Here is the link to the web page at Newegg.com:
Click here to go to Newegg.com page for Windows XP MCE.
And what defines a "standard PC "? Before MCE existed, many computers, including mine, included the enhanced video cards which are now "standard" in the Media Center PC's including such items as video capture, TV Tuner, etc.
So, gentlemen...the question I posed still remains to be answered.

No use running MCE on a system unless the system meets the hardware requirements that are designed to USE the features of MCE, such as remote controls, recording, etc. Nothing short of high end hardware is best.

Thanks, Tony. That's more like it.
