OK, Since the previously installed programs (firefox 1.0.4, mozilla 1.7.8,
netscape 4.79 were acting funny I decided to remove all of them and start
over. When i say funny - dont ask, just like some lines were crossed, very
    complicated.

I also went through the registry and removed all occurances of the 3 browser
names above that i could find.

So, now i have just installed Mozilla and it still found the profile for netscape.
How, i dont know, puzzled.. but Mozilla seems to be working better.

Question - I normally install several plugins, to wit - flashplayer, shockwave,
and wmpplugin. There is one other named: wmp9.reg and i'm not sure about it.

    wmp9.reg contains this:
    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\MOZILLA.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\PHOENIX.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\MOZILLAFIREBIRD.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\FIREFOX.EXE]

I'm not sure if its ok to put this into mozilla (or at least until i have FF and
    netscape re-installed.

    Thoughts?

    Update:

I installed flash, no problems (pages loaded fine).
I installed shockwave, no problems (pages loaded fine).
I installed wmpplugin and now pages only part way again, maybe its an older
    one.....

How do i uninstall the wmpplugin? It doesnt show in the add/remove CP.

    thanks,
    savagcl

    Clif,

    The Profile is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

When you uninstall Netscape 7, Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc., the Profiles are not touched. The Netscape 4 Users folder will be removed if you deleted the Program folder for Netscape 4.

When you uninstall, this is what I suggest:
    Uninstall the browser using Add/Remove
    Backup the plugins folder

Delete the C:\Program Files\mozilla.org folder, or
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape,
or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder, etc.

    REBOOT YOUR PC - Important!

    Install the browser
Copy the backup of the plugins folder to the new program folder
When asked if you wish to overwrite the existing folder answer: YES

As to the wmp9.reg file, look in the Registry, as the keys should still be there unless you removed them in your Registry cleanup. If, however, the keys are gone, it is fine to add the wmp9.reg information.

FWIW, I edited the file before adding it to the Registry, as some of the information is obsolete, specifically the PHOENIX, and FIREBIRD keys. I also have both Netscape 7 and Netscape 8 installed, so I added them to the file as well. You might want to do this too in the event you may decide to try either one.

To edit the file, rename it wmp9.txt, and open it in Notepad. (You probably know all this)

    Remove these lines:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\PHOENIX.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\MOZILLAFIREBIRD.EXE]

The file should then look this this:

    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\MOZILLA.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\FIREFOX.EXE]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\NETSCP.EXE
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ ShimInclusionList\NETSCAPE.EXE

Once edited, Click on "Save as" and name the file wmp9.reg

Note: this is not a plugin. This simply adds MediaPlayer 9 to Mozilla, Netscape, and Firefox. Otherwise Mozilla uses MediaPlayer 6.

More than you ever wanted to know! ;)

    Hi Ramona,

Its only 103 temp (feels like) here so i'm a shutin for the day.

You described exactly what i did except for 1/2 little things.
There is also a mozilla and/or firefox in the program files\common folder. These
    need to be deleted also.

I forgot to backup the plugins, been a long day. I think the wmpplugin is for
wmp9. I have wmp10 on my sys. Wonder if there is an updated one for wmp10.
    I'll look around.

After removing these browsers (via CP) and deleting all the folders and cleaning
the registry + a reboot (a requirement after changing the registry), where do
    the profiles hide????

As far as the reg4 file, i just copied yours and saved it with a reg extension.
Hope you dont mind. I can look for ShimInclusionList in the reg and it will
    show me whats there.

Point is, i didnt have a problem with loading pages until after i put in the
wmp9 or the wmpplugin, not sure which.

    Thanks for the help, Ramona,

    Clif,

Our heat wave is a killer here also. Right now our heat index is 111, much too hot for venturing out of the A/C!

If you run MediaPlayer 10, and you had problems after installing the Registry Key for WMP9, then don't install it this time... To the best of my knowledge there is no Registry Key for WMP10. Just leave that alone if Mozilla is running as it should.

I see that you're talking about this file:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.2_2004080415

Yes, it's fine to delete that file also.

    Your Profile is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

    Stay cool!

This Page has excellent troubleshooting tips for Media Player and Firefox. If you haven't installed the ActiveX plugin for Firefox, you may want to do that. The link is included in the above page.

There is no ActiveX plugin for Mozilla 1.7.10 as yet. This ActiveX plugin has nothing to do with IE ActiveX, and is for use with Windows Media Player ONLY.

I have edited the unneeded phoenix.exe and mozillafirebird.exe keys. Now, I have firefox.exe, and I added kmeleon.exe for good measure. But the the shiminclusion entries are necessary to play WMP, and, were not automatically included for Mozilla. Not sure about Firefox.

The ShimInclusionList entries aren't "necessary" to use WMP in Firefox, but Firefox will try to use an older version of the WMP plugin (6.4) instead of the actual version. This is what the Registry patch fixes for WMP9.

Then, they are necessary. I don't want to use an older version of WMP.
and, still, it makes no difference with certain websites such as mtv.com, or vh1.com.
