I am having trouble connecting to the Internet with a dial-up modem. I did able to connect last week but for some strange reason I cant connect now. I have bellsouth as my ISP. I hear the modem dialing but after there is silence then it pops up this error 678 saying the remote computer does not respond. I have checked all the settings and the query modem and eveything is says it is working so I even called bellsouth and they seemed to think it is on my end. I even called the number on the phone and is sounds like the remote computer on their end is working. I hope someone will help.

One 'trick' which sometimes works is to create a new dialup networking connection.

Make a note of the relevant details from your existing connection and in Control Panel > Network Connections use the New Network Connection Wizard to set up a new connection - with a different name to your existing one, but with the same details. Do not simply make a copy of the existing DUN (right click > create copy)

Alternatively if your ISP provides connection software on CD try using that to reload their dialler - if they provide one..

Sometimes modems quit working, too. Pull the side of the case off, and look at where your telephone line plugs in. It is either built into the motherboard or a card seated on the motherboard. Pull it out and reseat it, if the latter, and try again. Then try a known working one in its place. Dial up modem cards are not expensive ($15) so you may just want to replace yours.

Thanks Pete and Johanna. I have downloaded the driver for the modem so maybe this will work if not I will try to pull the card out and reseat it might even have to buy another one. Until then I am listening to other suggestions.

    Thanks Billy

But you got an answer, it is your modem.

Well Johnna and Mark you are right it was the modem after all. I put in a different modem to test it and sure enough it was the modem so I threw the bad modem in the trash. Thanks for you suggestion.
