    Hi everyone:
I'm new in the forum and I need some help.
I use in my main PC Win98 and Netscape 7.0 for my e.mail.
Today, I decided to migrate to WindowsXP and to my surprise, once I finished the upgrading, I notice I had lost the access to my e.mail system.
When I tried to enter Netscape Mail, it told me there was no link to that mail server.
I uninstalled WindowsXP and Voilá!!!, I have my e.mail system back working like a charm again.
    Could anybody give a hand?
    Thanks
    Rubén

If I understand correctly, you are replacing an older OS with WinXP. WinXP places the Profiles in a different path, and hides them to boot.
Take a look at this link, considering that you are going from one OS to another
Most people do that from one computer to another.
You will be ok if you saved the profile, make sure that it is backed up.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
Indeed I'm trying to move from Win98 to Windows XP. I have two other PCs running on Windows XP, and this one, which is my main computer for work, uses Win98.
Is there any way to move my Netscape mail to a different HD and back to Netscape once Windows XP is installed?
Thank you again for your advise. I'll give it a try.
    Rgds.

Ruben, if you look at the link which I give you can see that the entire profile.slt folder is saved. I stored them (I had 12 profile at the peak) on CDs. You can put them wherever you want, but you will eventually have to play by the rules.
I still back up entire .slt folders, and not so many, thankfully.
I can, then choose, to copy the mail account Inbox file, or everything

    I Westside:
I guess I should have put myself in the BEGINNERS level because as far as computers, there's so much to learn that I sound like a Lego.
This time my question is going to be very simple:
Can I simply copy the .slt folders(I found three)that I found in my C: drive to another driver or to a CD?
If I can do that, I guess I should be able to access them once I upgrade to Window XP.
    TNX again,
    Rubén
NOTE: I will find the way to put myself in the forum as a "BEGINNER "

Don't worry about your classification. Just ask question, when necessary. We try to help here as much as we can, and you are welcome to share with us your experience. I, generally like to give links to Ramona's Solutions, and the one about profiles will be of greatest interest to you. You may want to save all your folders, or use only some information to create a combined profile.
As regaining access to your old information, there are many way to use what you saved, but I suggest that you start with the generic profile which is given you, and take it from there.

    Welcome to the Forum, redelc!

    rubén,

This link: http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7pctopc.html spells out the process of moving a profile from Windows 98 to Windows XP. It is lengthy, so if you prefer, we can walk you through the process step by step.

    Do this first:
    On the Windows 98 PC:

    1. Start Netscape
    2. Clear the Netscape Cache
(Edit | Preference | Advanced | Cache | then click "Clear Cache" button)
    3. Clear the Netscape History
(Edit | Preference | Navigator | History | then click "Clear History" button)
    4. Open Mail & Newsgroups, empty the Trash folder, and Compact Mail
    5. Repeat these steps for each profile.
    6. Exit Netscape
    7. Next: open Windows Explorer and using WinZip, or any Zip Program, and Zip the entire Profiles folder
    Do this for each Profile
Copy the zipped Profile(s) folder(s) to CD, or whatever storage media you use.

Let us know when this is complete, and we will begin the copy process to Windows XP. You cannot lose your Mail if you have it backed up and on storage media! ;)

Not to worry about your experience status.

    Ramona

    Hi Ramona:
Actually I printed the instruction from the link, but since I have three HD in my computer, I still wonder if I can simply copy the profile uncompress to one of the secondaries HD and once I finish intalling XP I can copy it back to Netscape.

    Hi Ramona:
    Here's what I did:
I just "copied" the profile from C:\Windows\Applications Data\Mozilla the Profiles folder to a CompactFlash memory card.
Then, I switched computers and I'm working from one with WindowsXP.
This PC doesn't have Netscape, so I will install Netscape and I will try to follow the instructions I have printed.
    Thanks

    Hi Ramona:
I know I'm becoming a pain in the neck, but I need help.
    Here's where I am:
I was able to copy the profile to:
    C:\Documentes and Settings\WinXp_profile_name(which is my name)\Application Data\Mozilla
After that, I was able to open a wordpad and I got to open one of the three profile, which starts like this:
    # Mozilla User Preferences
// This is a generated file!

    user_pref(............

    Now the question is:
How do I go to the next step (7):
    Change the PC #1 path:
    FROM:
    C:\Windows\Applications.....
    TO:
    C:\Documents and Settings.....

I'm telling you, you have a lot of pacience...

    Ruben,

You're not a pain, YET! Just kidding. :D

If you are at Step 7., and have the prefs.js file opened in Wordpad, then proceed to Step 8.:

    8. In WordPad click on Edit | "Find "

Type in the path for the Windows 98 Profile
    Example:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\myNSProfile\abcd1234.slt

When the first instance of the OLD path is found, then click on:
Edit | "Replace ", and copy the new path in the "Replace with" field
    Example:
    C:\Documents and Settings\WinXP_profile_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\myNSProfile\abcd1234.slt

Now click on "Replace All ", and each instance of the OS path of Win98 will be replaced with the OS path of WinXP.
When all paths have been changed, then click on File | Save

Ask any further questions you may have.

    Ramona

    Good Morning Ramona:
I can see you are in the Midwest(I'm in FL)
When I open the .slt files with wordpad, I could see several entries like the ones in the instructions. Perhaps the main difference I found, was several double back slashes. (e.g.:C:\\Windows\\Application Data\Mozilla\\Profiles\\myNSProfile\\abcd1234.slt)
When I go to edit|find and I type that entry, it tells me: "WordPad has finished searching the document ". Then when I go back to edit|replace and I type the replacement entry, it gives me the same message.
I saved in my CompactFlash card a copy of one of the three profiles, can I paste it here?
    TKS and rgds.

Use the double back slashes ( \\ ) when entering the paths in the Find component.

To answer your question, you can copy in the Profiles you saved, but you still have to edit the paths... Either that or manually copy files from one Profile to the other. This is much easier to do.

Let us know how it goes.

I used the double back slashes and I'll do the same with the other Profiles.
    Thank you much once again.
