Software for Brother QL-500 printer will not install

I am posting this here in WinXP because I believe I have a problem in the OS that is preventing the software for my new Brother QL-500 Label Printer to install.

The installation goes all the way through as if it is installing properly. There is no hint of any problem until it finishes and the only thing that has installed is the driver. During the install it will put a shortcut on the desktop and it will disappear 4 seconds later. When it is finished it has put a folder called 'Brother' in Program files, but the folder is empty.

I have discussed this with a Brother CSR and they are locking into it. He said that he had not encountered this before and I believe this is something unique to my machine.

I did try turning off windows firewall protection and it made no difference. I have a very clean running OS and nothing unusual shows up in a HijackThis scan.

    Anyone have any suggestions.

    Daniel

I am willing to try almost anything to get this to work. Does anyone have a suggestion?

    dan239,

Check to make sure Print Spooler is Started and set to Automatic in Services.

Here is some more information that might help someone find the answer.

It appears that the install is going as normal and it is also uninstalling almost immediately.

I tried what Brother's FAQ suggested and the results are the same. I believe the driver is installing but the software is not. The driver is listed in 'Printers and Faxes'.

    Thanks again,
    Daniel

Do you see "Brother P-touch Editor Version 4.1" in the Add/Remove Programs window?

If you do, the software is installed.

    If you don't:
    a) Restart you computer
    b) Look for the software on the Installation CD and run setup to install it.
    c) You can download the software from here:

No, I am not installing just the driver, but thanks for the suggestion. I am using the supplied CD most of the time to install both the driver and the software. Proof of this is I see the Desktop shortcut appear during the install for about 4 seconds and then disappear. Also I see it installing many files in "C:\Program Files\Brother" but when it is finished this folder is empty.

I did also download just the software from Brother and I get the same results.

I did try Brother's suggestion to put the software in a root folder and install from there. Again the same results.

    Dan,

I'm not sure whether this will work or not. But, it's worth a try since you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Copy the software files from the Installation CD and paste them into C:\Program Files\Brother once the driver is installed. If you want a desktop shortcut to that software, you can create one of those manually too.

If it doesn't work, you can always delete the files.
If it does work, then you're in business.

This will not work since there is no program to run in this software. It is for installation. It has to install all the components such as registery entrys and others as well. To use this software, it has to be installed.

    Thanks for trying

A couple of further thoughts to add to those already put forward ....

Turn off your antivirus software and try an install.

Try an install in Safe Mode.

I have tried several times to install after turning off Windows Firewall which is the only antivirus software I am using.

I tried to install in safe mode and it went a ways then gave me a notice of '1607: Unable to install InstallShield scripting runtime'. Clicking OK ended the install.

A firewall and antivirus software are two completely different animals. A firewall is essentially a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network - your PC.

For any Internet connected PC or network, a regularly updated anti-virus program is a must. Anti-virus software works by examining individual files within your hard disk for telltale signs, or signatures, of specific virus programs and should also scan all incoming email and files loaded to the PC by any means.

Forgive the lecture, but if you are not running any sort of antivirus software it is almost inevitable that your PC is infected without your knowledge.

I suggest that you download and install AVG Free, update it's definitions and run a full system scan. I would also run an online virus scan from RAV or Housecall via Quicklinks in my signature.

Do you scan regularly for spyware/adware? If not may I suggest you download through Quicklinks Adaware SE (configure it as detailed here) and Spybot, run both and delete all they find.

For continuous monitoring and protection against spyware/adware download Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta. This will provide ongoing background protection, autoupdating and a daily scan of your system.

For a degree of permanent protection download SpywareBlaster 3.4, update it and 'Enable all Protection'.

There is more that can be done in terms of protection, especially in the use of Internet Explorer - How to Surf the Internet more Safely with Internet Explorer

When you are sure that your PC is free from 'infections' try to load the Brother software again.

I am downloading AVG Free now. The other suggestions you made I already have installed. I recently ran an online scan with RAV and it found nothing. I have never had a virus infect my machine as far as I know and I do online scans regularly.

    Dennis
Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not the case for me.

    Pete,
I installed AVG, scanned my system and 'No Virus Found'.
