I have run PC beginner Utilities Suite 2005 to test my system and it reports that ECC test fails everytime.
Can someone tell me what this is and if I can, or need, to fix it.

    canute,

I believe that 'ECC' error is related to your RAM (memory). Microsoft has a pretty good 'memory tester'. You can find it HERE . Follow the instructions provided.
Post back with the results if you have more questions.

Not all memory is ECC (Error correcting) and not all motherboards will accept it.

If you want to put your mind at rest download Everest and go to Motherboard > SPD where the details of your RAM modules should be shown and look under Error Detection Method.

Your motherboard manual will tell you whether it runs ECC or non-ECC memory modules. It may have the "wrong" memory installed or the Utilities Suite 2005 may be testing for the wrong type of memory.

If your system seems relatively stable I would not worry. If it seems to be having problems with some programs, do the diagnostics that Mr B suggested.

Software diagnostics can often misread the system because there are so many different pieces of hardware on different motherboards. There may be diagnostics utilities at the motherboard manufacturers website.
