    Hey there,

I have a compaq presario 5102US that I bought back in 2001. When I bought it it had Windows ME. Last year I change the hardrive and installed windows XP and went with it for a year. I decided to change the hd and start fresh. I wanted to install another hd without the one I already had. However, I ran into problems. I boot XP from the cd and the drive formating takes place, however, when the system reboots to continue setup this message comes up:
    Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
    NTLDR:Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

and windows does not start. I tried a different hard drive but It made no good. I tried several things such as removing the bios batery and even updating the bios itself, that did several days before removing the original hd.

I hope some one have some comments.
    Thanks in advance,
    sincerely,

    teck

did you remove the old drive from the system? Does the drive you are trying to use have the master/slave jumper in the right place?

This message indicates that the system is looking for the files on the first partition on the master hard drive on the primary controller.

It sounds as if you are formatting the drive but not actually installing the OS. When you reboot is the CD still in the drive? You may need that to be able to finish the install. The installation process should be copying the necessary files to a temp directory. This may not be happening.

Also, there could be a problem with the Master Boot record.Boot up with a Win95/98/ME boot disk and run fdisk /mbr.

    Hey there!
I got it. When I formated the drive I was using NTFS (quick) and now I tried it without quick and it worked.

Yea, that would do it. You can only format quick if the drive had been formatted previously with NTFS...
