Does anyone have a recommendation for a good preferably free Web accelerator? I presently use Artera Turbo and have been using it for probably 5 years, and am not entirely happy or unhappy with it but it cost me $5.00 every month on an ongoing basis. I'd like to find a good free one if one is available.
I use a satellite ISP if that makes a difference.

floyd--I know nothing about satellite connections.
What is your present connection or download speed?
Most "accelerators" are for speeding up dialup surfing (loading site to site), and I have heard the improvements are minimal. Some claim to speed up downloading of files from the web to your hard drive. Again mainly aimed at dialup connections.
$5 per month sounds excessive. Have you tried operating without Altera?
You can speed download speeds, if you really need it, using the following technique (splitting files, which is what most download accelerators do).

Having said all that, here is a bunch of programs to look into

And read up on the possible spyware aspects of Download Accelerator here

Jim, thanks for the reply. A satellite connection isn't much more then a cable modem or connection, but instead of coming down the cable it comes from a satellite connection. Mostly used by people like me that don't have any access to cable or DSL lines.
I connect at about 500kbs. I have a low speed package. I can go up as high as 1.5 mb speed at a price.
Artera sped up my old 26kbs dialup as it does my broadband and does make a substantial difference. I just don't like to have to pay a monthly fee for it.
Allot of people confuse it with a download accelerator that splits files etc. Mine works by compressing data coming down and graphics degradation to achieve speed which I understand and can live with.

floyd--Do you have any freedom to change ISP's? Many ISP's now include accelerators in their packages. See here
    http://www.google.com/search?source...GLD:2004-31,GGLD:en&q=web+accelerator+-google
(For example, that list shows Netscape now is in the ISP business with a $10/month fee including accelerators.)

P.S. Google also was offering a free accelerator for a while. They claim to have had so much demand that they no longer accept new clients. However, I hear that there (also?) were problems.

They could always come back to life.
