I'm not positive I'm totally following what your saying but what I get is that everything works with the drive except this one CD. That would tend to make me believe that the actual CD is bad.

But same CD does work in my desktop computers

Thanks a lot for responding .It is very interesting issue for Computer genius.
I will little bit eloborate this.
I have copy of software on CDROM which I insert in my drive(of HP laptop and then explore/setup/install .
then I go to programfile and open this software (note that original CDROM has to be in drive to run this program)I note that drive starts running but soon after I receive message "error reading try to remove and insert CDROM and click OK but in vain it repeats .
But very same program I am able to run on my other desktop PC.
    What could be the reason.

In that case it seems that there may be a problem with the CD drive - carefully check that the lens is not dirty or obscured. On the other hand your desktop drive may be less sensitive to imperfections on the CD. The data area is probably not read when the program is installed - only when it is run with the CD in the drive.

One possible solution - which may or may not work, is to copy the entire CD to the hard drive - if the drive will read it all - and install the program from this copy. It should then run completely off the hard drive. This method does not always work - it depends on how the software is programmed.

    AMEN to that.

I tried it on one PC and it worked just fine.

Same CD and the other PC, forget it until I put the CD in the a different Drive.
