This may not be a Windows problem per se, but at startup more often then not the usb mouse is not found. Unplugging and replugging fixes the problem, however ther shd be a better way i guess.
Wld be neat if the mouse was simply found at startup.
BTW I tried with two different ones, with the same result.

    Hello Willem,

Have you tried uninstalling the device in Device Manager and then re-booting allowing Windows to find the device?

Is this mouse a replacement for the original?

Is it an optical moouse with it's own drivers?

    Regards - Charles

    hi Charles,

thanks for the input, but no luck. Its a logitech optical mouse and its not the original. The original was an el cheapo ps2 mouse.
I tried with a different usb mouse with the same result
next thing, i will plug into the ps2 port, using an adapter.
i also have a microsoft mouse here it the office which i will take home to try out

    Kind regards,

    Willem

For the reason of this post I have both a PS2 as a the main device and a USB as a secondary Device.

The USB does not always work until Windows is fully loaded.

Plus when we play games my Wife uses the 2nd. That keeps us from having to slide the Mouse back and forth across the desktop.

This suggests a problem with the usb port or (virtual) hub. I would go into Device Manager and uninstall all the USB entries under USB Serial Bus Controllers and reboot to allow Windows to reinstall them.

Over a period of time with both 98SE and XP Pro I find the good old fashioned PS2 Mouse to be far more reliable.

And they seem to work with any old OS I put them on. I have used them on the ANCIENT Win95.

All four of mine are MS devices with a Scroll Wheel.

Then it ought have its own drivers - and if it does, try re-loading them if Pete's suggestion doesn't work.

the little green adapter seems to carry the day: the mouse is now connected to the ps2 port and seems to behave as it should.
    Thanks guys!!!
