    hello,
new to xp just installed several months ago. i notice a lag of 30-45 seconds when retrieving messages in OE. my other machine does not experience this delay so i know it is not a problem w/the isp. i have sp2 running and have had delay from day 1. any suggstions on what could be causing delay. incidently,i have also shutdown mcafee during checking email thinking it may be doing scanning of messages but that did not improve matters...

eroica--Do you have any delay visiting webpages? Or is the problem confined to the email?
Try turning off your firewall to see if that makes any difference. And are you running any third party firewall? When you installed XP you probably also installed Windows Firewall. You only want one firewall running. Turn off Windows Firewall (Control Panel|Windows Firewall). The third party firewall probably is a better firewall since it monitor outgoing as well as incoming traffic, whereas Windows Firewall monitors only incoming traffic.

no surfing w/ie is fine. even w/mcaffe turned off i get the delay. i do notice that it is on the "Finding Host" portion of retrieval of messages that is taking all the time. i would almost say that that would point to a DNS trouble w/my ISP but i also run Linux on a seperate laptop and retrieving email from there exhibits no delay. So that is why I believe something is wrong w/my XP and/or OE setup....

p.s.- the windows firewall was neutered first thing when i setup XP..

eroica--My quick reaction is that there is a server problem, but must confess to being unsatisfied with that, since you say the problem is specific to one machine, and you have no problems with another. And the Finding Host notice suggests the issue is not due to your OE folders being too full.
I presume both PC's are using the same physical connection to the internet/mail provider?
And that your settings in OE Tools|Accounts|Properties are the same for both PC's?
Do you have any proxy settings (or other settings) in one PC different than the other? (OE Tools|Options|Connection|Change)
I am not familiar with Linux, so cannot comment whether that has anything to do with the differences.
    Have you considered spyware?

just to close out this thread w/an answer, once i switched over to AVG from Mcafee viruscan the problem immediately went away. One of the host of mcafee services running in the backround was undoubtedly doing something to e-mail b4 OE was able to display messages...
