I have searched the website and can't seem to locate any open threads on this topic.

Running Windows 98 SE with IBM ADF scanner and HP932C printer

First order of installation scanner and HP printer worked fine.
I have Microsoft Picture it 99 installed as my photo programme and all was ok.
Installed a Jam Cam couple of years ago and Picture it or HP photo (came with the printer) were working with the jpeg created from them.

    NOW
Microsoft gives me error message and "crashes" the programme for Picture it 99 when I try to print or send the picture.

I started using the HP photo programme and it prints okay.

The problem that has turned up is that the IBM ADF scanner is installed, but no longer works. Error message when I try the scanner utility.

Checking the system files, I have three folders.
    Twain.......nothing in it.
    Twain 32..IBM scanner
    Twain 32..HP printer.

Should there be seperate folders with a file in each? I mean is the problem of not finding or using twain correctly the reason the scanner won't work and microsoft picture it errors out?

I'm a novice, but it seems to me that folders hold files and perhaps these should be in one folder so the computer can find or share them?

Thanks in advance for any clear explanation of a cure.

Hi Gloria, I don't have much experience with scanners, but I will try to throw some things at you. Maybe you can use them or disregard them.

I am not sure exactly where those folders are/would be. Are they on the "root drive" which would be C:\Twain, C:\Twain32, etc, or are they in the system folder, which would be C:\Windows\System\Twain, etc.? If they are on the root drive, it will be where the scanner installer put them so that you can use Control Panel > Add New Hardware wizard to locate the drivers. When hardware is installed the driver files are selected by Windows and copied to the folder C:\Windows\System.

To get the scanner working again...
I would go to Device Manager (see Help if you don't know where it is), highlight and "remove" the scanner. Go to the Printers folder (in Control Panel), right-click on the printer and delete it. Shut-down and disconnect the printer. When you restart reinstall the scanner (twain drivers). If you sure that the scanner can be "seen ", shut-down and reconnect the printer and then run the "Add Printer" wizard if the printer is not reinstalled automatically.

I think your statement that you installed the scanner before the printer will be the key (that is the problem I have come across). You will need to remove the printer before you can reinstall the scanner.

If Picture It causes trouble (makes the scanner unworkable), go through the process again, but also remove Picture It in Add/Remove Programs when you delete the scanner and printer, then reinstall it after you know that the hardware is working.

Don't be afraid of removing hardware from your system if you have the drivers available to reinstall them. It won't be much trouble for you because you have already installed working drivers, you will just have to tell Windows which ones to select.

Thaks Matt, I understand now about the order of installation and how to do that.
The Twain files are all in C:\WINDOWS
