i just aquired an older Compaq Amada E500 Laptop, running XP Pro. IT runs fine but i try to plug in an external moniter into the serial port and the moniter is all snow or fuzzy. i can make out some of the windows stuff but it is not clear.

i changed the standard 60hz to 72 which made it look better but i'm seeing triple items on the screen.

anybody got a fix for this? i tried the video settings for naught....
    thx--jw

Surely not the serial port - typo?

Try loading the appropriate monitor drivers. Assume the monitor works OK otherwise on a desktop?

Might also need to update the video card drivers. When you go into display properties->settings tab, do you see monitors 1 & 2?

yea--possibly the video drivers. although i installed xp pro with svc pack 2 on this laptop. no, i don't see moniter 1 & 2! it just lists default moniter 3 times. i tried those but they don't work.

the 15 "moniter i have is also a compaq that does work with my desktop
i'll see if there are drivers to update......thx

Are you seeing the dual monitors in DISPLY properties (not device manager) like the attached picture?

I recently just had the same problem, the reason it was not working was because the drivers were installed. :| The only problem with this is, you won't be able to do any gamming. I just un-installed the drivers for my laptops vid card and I had both monitors running at the same time without any problem.

    Good Luck
