    Hi all
A friend of mine got a computer sold at a yard sale. A Gateway 2000 at the start up screen it asks for a password. Of course he does not know the password that was put on there.
Is there a way to by pass this, or delete the password?

He tried Gateways web site but they want money for tech support, which at this time he does not want to give, not knowing if the machine is even workable once he can get it to windows.

    Any Idea's ?

    Thanks
    Geri

At what stage does the PC ask for a password - during POST? in which case it is probably a BIOS password or at one of the Windows screens?

If it's at the POST screen removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes and may be closing a jumper momentarily should reset the bios and lose the password - I think.

Otherwise try a clean reinstall Windows with format. Clearly nothing to be lost on the drive.

    Hi Pete
I found some instructions here GW FAQ It's at Post, but there may be one at the windows screen also? but he can't get that far. There is instruction to remove those also if there is one at windows.

    Thanks

Yes, that's it :) Would rather doubt there is another to log onto Windows, but you never know!
