Mozilla Firefox Number 4 in CNET's Top Ten Downloads of the Past Decade

Online technology network CNET is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and its Download.com site has produced a list of the top 10 downloads of the past 10 years, with Mozilla Firefox in fourth place.

"Firefox was the first browser to show the promise of breaking Microsoft's stranglehold on the browser market," the brief write-up says. "Lightweight, secure, and packed with useful features, Firefox exemplifies the promise of the strengthening open-source movement. "

ICQ occupies the top slot in the chart. Napster, Ad-Aware and RealPlayer also make the list. Note that the ten applications appear to have been picked because they "best represent the top trends in downloading over the past decade" and not because they are the most downloaded programs (CNET maintains a separate list of the most popular applications on Download.com).
