    Hi,

I have XP home, & I was recommended by
    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
to download several update files yesterday and then my pc began to have all sorts of problems.

Now I can’t even get online & the icons in "View Network Connections" all disappeared; I can’t open realPlayer & windows media player; and I can’t even copy & paste in Microsoft Word documents because
“This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document.â€
    And there are more troubles.

    I downloaded these updates yesterday:

    Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Windows malicious software Removal Tool "“ June 2005 (KB890830)
Security update for Windows XP (KB893066)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB883939)
Security update for Windows XP (KB896428)
Security update for Windows XP (KB896422)
Security update for Windows XP (KB890046)
Security update for Windows XP (KB896358)

And today when I checked Add/Remove Programs, I found many more Hotfixes & updates that previously didn’t exist but now appear. In addition to the above list, other suspicious files are:

    Microsoft Data Access Components KB870669
    Recommended Hotfix "“ 421701D
Security Update for Windows XP (KB883939)
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB834707
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB867282
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB873333
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB873339
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB885250
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB885835
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB885836
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB885884
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB886185
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB887472
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB887742
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB888113
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB888302
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB890047
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB890175
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB890859
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB890923
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB891781
    Windows XP Hotfix "“ KB893086
    Windows XP Service Pack 2

Which one of these could be causing the problem? I checked the SP2 help website using my friend’s computer, as I can’t go online w/ my own pc, but I couldn’t find any related info. Does anyone know what’s going on?

    Thanks beforehand.

zwyang--Recommended Hotfix "“ 421701D is spyware. I suggest you go through the procedure recommended here
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37074
Also run your AntiVirus with latest virus definitions installed.
See if that fixes things. If not, you can uninstall each Update in the first batch to see if it (or any) is the cause of the problem you are having. Of course you will have to reinstall those that cause no problem.
I would not worry that a whole bunch of Updates just appeared in the Add/Remove program list. I think there was some bug in an earlier Update that caused that. Sounds like the latest batch of Updates fixed that.
And you will be pleased to hear there are more Updates on Windows Updates as of today.

    thanks, Welshjim.

I called microsoft & they had me repaired my xp & moved all the updates. we suspect it's the service pack 2 and/or the security updates that caused conflicts w/ other programs on my computer. now i have to be very cautious when downloading those updates.

have you encountered any problems while downloading the service pack 2?

thanks again, and have a nice day!

zwyang--Glad to hear things are working again.
But did you do anything about removing the Recommended Hotfix "“ 421701D spyware? I would be concerned that it is just waiting to mess things up in the future.
I had no problems with downloading or installing SP2. :)
What did the MS tech say about reinstalling SP2 or any of the updates you have uninstalled?
I think the safest way is to use Windows Updates (which you should go to anyway, to see what else is offered).
