    Hi all-
Whenever my father has computer questions he asks me and 99% of the time I'm able to fix it/help him.

I am a dedicated desktop man, and my Dad is going to buy a laptop and he is relying on my judgement again. I don't know anything about laptops. He wants it mainly to watch dvd's on trips back and forth from Florida. Secondarlily, he wants to be able to surf the web at the same time my Mom's online.

He is looking at a Dell Inspiration 4100. Can anyone give me a good reason for him NOT to get this one? Are there any bells and whistles another might have? And what are the bells and whistles that you might want in a laptop?

    Thanks everyone.

    Ed

The screen/monitor aka viewing thingie is probably one of the most important aspects of a laptop. Big is $better$.

Check out www.pcworld.com and look in their review section for ideas..

A word of caution about laptops, they're not upgradeable. What you get is what you got. You can't upgrade the CPU, hard drive, video, sound etc. Good laptops let you add memory and you can expand the abilities somewhat with PCMCIA card addons, but if he's looking for upgradeability, a laptop won't cut the cheese.

I'm sorry, but that is nonsense.

It's possible to upgrade several of the components in a laptop. For example, in the case of a CPU, upgrading is difficult (Joe Average could certainly not do the job himself), upgrade options are limited (by mobo bus speed) and it's probably not a cost effective exercise but it nonetheless *can* be done.

Hard drives can certainly be upgraded with relative ease.

Just about any laptop manufactured after 1996 will allow for more memory to be added.

A laptop is not *as* upgradeable as a desktop PC - but it *is* upgradeable!

Not really. Have a look at this review. Browse some of the other reviews on the site too to see whether another product better suits his needs.
