Just got a new system, and it was pre-installed w/XP home, service pack 2. A friend of mine recommended Pro over Home, and I was wondering - what are the advantages, and should I make a switch?

Uses: internet, low-end gaming, video editing/dvds, but it is for home use.

Microsoft's most advanced desktop operating system, Windows XP, is at the center of ongoing personal computing innovation. With Windows XP, home users can experience the digital world like never before, while business users can work smarter and faster. wishoosier--As Steve R Jones has said, you have to compare Home vs. Pro and see whether you are likely to use the additional features of Pro. I think you will have to spend at least $100-125 to replace Home with Pro.

P.S. I installed a full retail version of Pro SP2 over an installation of Home SP2. No problems. I did not lose any personal data and only a few settings were changed.
One concern is whether personal data might be lost when using the Upgrade CD. So back up your personal data before trying to install Pro.

And if you buy WinXP Pro be sure to get the SP2 version whether you buy the full install or the upgrade.

The major difference between Pro & Home is that Pro is designed for a business environment. It is able to join a domain, Home cannot. You have more granular control over permissions with Pro, but for home use that isn't really needed.

    Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick w/home; after all, I was upgrading from a 4-year old system running Millenium edition on 128Mb of RAM.
I've taken a huge step up!
