Instead of using the floppies set the cdrom as a boot device and try to install from the cd.

any particular reason why it won't work? are your boot floppies ok? Maybe try to download a new set from the net.

if i take out the disk boot away from the boot up, it gives me the hal.dll msg...

it doesnt seem like the boot disks thats causing it, b/c it fully loads...but i'll give it a shot.. thx

i made new disks and shut down as soon as i pressed the "R" button for recovery option...

Do you have the right set of boot disks? those for Pro and Home are not the same.

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

AFAIK the boot disks basically install the CD-ROM drivers - and a bit more and you need the CD to run Recovery console, From MS ....

Are you sure that your CD-ROM drive is working properly?

I'm using the right disks...i tried both the reg xp pro disks and the sp1 xp pro disks..

I also tried my other cd rom drive..and that still didnt help... =[

Also, i tried putting the xp windows cd in another comp and it auto ran... so i dont think its that either...could it be my psu??

In case you did no do this you need to go into the bios of the computer and set the boot order of the computer. Put the cdrom first then the floppy.

zokle... you need to put the cd in the drive and then 'reboot' the computer. You don't want it to 'autorun' in Windows. If you need to... go into to your BIOS and set the 'Boot' order (with your CD drive being 1st).
When that particular screen (your screenshot) displays, did you try to make a selection or does it shut down immediately?

    B

    It depends...

Sometimes it shuts immediately when i press the button, or sometimes it shuts down a few seconds after it reaches the screen.

Btw, i tried the xp cd in another computer...just wanted to say the cd wasnt corrupt..

OK let me tell the WHOLE story...

I had this comp working, everything worked correctly, but sometimes it shut down randomly, probably b/c something was overheating. I have a amd 2800+ xp w/ asus a7n8x-E deluxe, ati radeon 9800 128mb, 1 gb corsair memory, 2 ide IBM hdd (sucky and what crashed) and 250gig WD sata drive (which i bought after the crash), and a 500w psu. I'm assuming it was probably the vid card overheating......

One night after shutting down, i turned it back on, and it gave me the "hal.dll missing" thing. I looked on this website on details on what to do and set my comp startup to cd>floppy>hdd. I thought everything was solved, but when i reached that screen :*(. Sadness..

Ive tried everything from different xp pro disks (sp1 and reg), using diff cd rom drives, and trying to clean install into the SATA drive alone (w/ the f6 and drivers). I also tried regular restoring w/ the SATA drive unplugged. But everytimg i end up at that screen, it crashes and im back to square one. I've tried to switch up the ram in diff orders, but no luck. I have ann all-in-one mobo, so im assuming theres no conflicts w/ the mobo's schtuff. In regards to the psu, i tried installing xp once w/ only the power plugged into the vid card, mobo, cdrom, floppydrive, and hdd.

Aiyeee...ive never had so many problems building a comp!!!!! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLP!

I think you have a hardware problem and the missing hal.dll may be a pointer to that.

As no progress is being made in this forum I have moved your thread to the Hardware forum and called up the 'cavalry'.

I have the same mobo in one of my desktops - try clearing the CMOS and starting over - page 2-17 in the manual.

I am going to figure that your drives are formatted NTFS. We'll take care of the possibilities of not getting it going first. Download the following:
    NTFS Dos reader
This little utility will allow you to read NTFS drives from DOS if you need to salvage files.

Now let's try to salvage the system...

I have never done SATA so can't give any great advice there but make sure your configuration is correct. I assume that it is as the system was running.

If there are any cards plugged in other than video and SATA(?) take em out. Go to BIOS and under plug and play make sure plug and play OS installed is disabled and enable reconfigure hardware. The reconfigure hardware may also be something like reconfigure configuration data, etc.. Also while in the BIOS make sure your boot order is set as follows:
    1) CDROM
    2) Floppy
    3) hard drive

Try to boot straight to the win CD.

    Get back with what happens.

:*(...when i did what u had told me..i get the "Please re-install a copy of the above file." and they're referring to the hal.dll file
    that's w/ the floppy missing..

    Btw........did i mention i dont exactly have a 100% "legit" copy of xp?? :D :D

i could try it w/ the floppy later..

oh, and for the nfts...the two ide hdd are FAT..

The new SATA drive is both FAT and NFTS...

Because of what I understand the forum policies to be I'm afraid that I can not offer any more assistance on this issue.
