I tried to expand the file wsock.dl_ , but it did not work, because msconfig requires that the file be in a .cab file. It is not. It is just in the i386 directory. How do you expand a file like that?

I found the expand command and used the following command:

    expand e:\i386\wsock.dl_ c:\windows\system32\wsock.dll
instead of expanding the file I get this back:
    Can’t open input file e:\i386\wsock.dl_

I also tried to move the file of the cd to my hard drive and expand it from there, but the result is the same.
    What am I doing wrong?

Wait for further response on this but I would think that if it is already there, the .dll, then you don't need to extract or expand it. You can't extract something that isn't compressed... :) From what you said it is my opinion that you just need to copy the file.

Sven, sorry, I can't help much because of my limited knowledge of Win XP. Is there anything that you may have missed in the Symantec instructions?

I note that you are referencing Wsock.dll and not Wsock32.dll.

Also check the version numbers. Find/search for the current file, right-click on it and select propertities, it will tell you the version. SP2 has a later version than SP1 or Win XP (from the DLL Help site), so the CD version may not be able to update/replace the SP2 version.

You are correct, I forgot "32" in the filename and it simply could not find the file, but it told me that it could not open it.

Thanks again I will let you know if this works

Well, I finally replaced the file, but I still can not burn my movie to DVD.
Nero has not responded to my help E-mail, but it only has been 24 hours. I will wait a while longer and if all else fails will first do a repair install and if that does not work either a full new install is in order.
Again thanks for all your help, and if anyone has any more suggestions, I am willing to try anything to avoid a full reinstall.

    Irdreed,

Thanks for your continued interest in this.
I went to the MS site, and I am at a total loss. I can not make heads or tails of what they are trying to tell me. It might as well be in Chinese.

Also, I tried to save the movie to my hard drive instead of my DVD Burner, and I get the same error.

Does that mean it is a Nero Problem?

    I’m stumped.

It probably shouldn't matter as to burning but if you purchase a DVD movie the max file size used is 1gig. I doubt it but it might have an affect. Are you trying to burn it as a .vob? If .mpg or .avi I've burned 4gig files in those formats. Could possibley be something in the handeling of .vob if that's what your burning.

Are you trying to burn it as a .vob? If .mpg or .avi……………I don’t know, whatever Nero wants to burn.

Did you totally remove and reinstall Nero AFTER disabling XP burner……. I don’t remember

OK, cool on disable of XP burner.

Ahhhhh, on the second. If you are selecting to burn DVD video Nero will convert .mpg or .avi files to .vob. .vob is the 'true' extension for DVD movies. I have NEVER seen a .vob file on a published DVD that was over 1gig. Actually they are slightly smaller.

As an experiment, from Nero Smart Start select Nero Express, NOT nero Vision Express. Select 'Data Disk'. Click 'Add' and just drag your file to the burn list window. Now try to burn the puppy.

If it will now burn then you have fallen under a missunderstanding that many others have. MPG and AVI files are like MP3 in audio. If you want to make an MP3 CD you do not burn as an audio CD you burn as a data CD. If you select audio CD as the output the MP3 files will be converted to true audio CD format. Same is true if you select to burn a video DVD as output. It will attempt to convert other file formats to VOB. The file may just plain be too big for it to do this.

If this fails and your not sure if you did the uninstall/reinstall of Nero AFTER turning off XP's burning then redo the uninstall/re-install with XP burning already off.

The terms used are missleading! Yes, avi and mpg ARE video. However, they are not video to a DVD, they are data.

I really hope one of the above works as I'm running out of ideas...

    SUCCESS!!

Thanks to all who where trying to help.

I finally decided to restore a ghost image that was 3 month old and that required me to rebuild some of my settings and install programs that where missing at the time.

I still don’t know what the problem was, and because of that it my reappear at some point, but I made a new Ghost image and keep that in a save place.

    Again thaks for your help
