Should I be able to play purchased movies on this drive (NEC3520A), mounted in an external enclosure using USB 2?

I am using WinXP with PowerDVD. Starts and stops almost immediately.

    Thanks

Yes, you should be able to (assuming no region problems). USB2 is fast enough.

What happens if you try to play a movie in Windows Media Player instead?

Pretty much the same results. I wonder if there is a codec needed to do this? I moved the drive to internal on the system and everything is OK, so at least the drive checks out. Now back to the problem of using it externally.

So it does play movies when installed internally?
I would suspect the USB controller drivers (or USB hub drivers if it runs through a hub). Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for (updated) USB controller drivers. I would remove the old ones in Device Manager, then run the program for the new drivers, they should be installed when you reboot.

Much progress made today. I tried the external enclosure with the Toshiba DVD player on my laptop usb port using "Intervideo Windvd and it worked ok. Installed PowerDvd on the laptop with same positive results.

Next I moved the enclosure to my tower using one of the REAR usb ports, instead of the front one, and it worked. I did not do anything with usb drivers.

Next will attempt same thing on tower with NEC unit installed in enclosure. Will advise.

    Thanks!

FYI - front mounted USB ports often do not work with some hardware devices. The front ports are soft wired to a header on the motherboard whereas the rear ports are hard wired (read soldered) to the motherboard. This appears to make a difference, especially if the power requirement for the attached device is relatively high.

interesting info. One thing about the external enclosure I am using is, it is self powered. That is not to say what you point out about usb power is not true in my case.
Normally I use those front ports for small items like my flash memory and the like.

    Thanks for the input
