I am new to this, so bear with me.

I am trying to connect my pc via a cable modem (mot SB5100) using Win XP Pro Sp2. My connection is direct, cable to network card (netgear FA311) in my pc, NO router. I get no connectivity. My receive light is steady, send light is blinking and online light is off.

I tried speaking to the Comcast tech services and they tell me my IP address indicates a router in my connection (192.168.100.11). Additionally, WIN XP detects a router or gateway in my setup. I am directly connected to the cable, no routers at all. I already did ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and I get the same thing.

What should I check in my setup? Is my NW card messed up? Or is it my modem? Or is it some config setting?

    PLease HELP!!

I flipped through the Manual and picked up on a few things.

First off that Modem is a router. Otherwise it wouldnt be giving you a private IP. The manual says it supports multiple computers with a Switch or Hub (not provided) which is another indication it's a router / Gateway.

The other item I noticed was all of the diagrams indicate a Crossover cable from the modem to the computer or switch. Is that what you have?

A crossover cable has the Orange and Greens reversed on one end of the cable.
Esentually one end of the cable is the 568a standard and the other end is the 568b standard.

    See the illistration here:

Don't know, I'll have to gome and look my cable.... Cant get on the internet at home.

Aside from the cable, could there be any other issues like LAN settings or any other config issues?

Did Comcast provide the Modem or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it they will need the MAC address to activate it.

There is a bug in the SP2, recognized by Microsoft.
I had the same problem for mora than a week. I downloaded a patch runned in both computers and voila!
For all those which has the same problem download the KB884020 and run it.
    Good luck.

THanks. Got the patch but still did not work!! Is there something I need in my physical cable coax connection like a filter of some sort. Currently, there is no filter. Just straight connection from:
    Outdoor TAP --> +7 db (splitter) --> in-house coax --> cable modem --> ethernet card --> PC

Am I missing a filter for return path data??

No but the splitter has to be 2 way or bi directional.

Try elliminating the splitter all together and see if it works.

THanks everyone! It's working now. Comcast tech support said that their new user registration server was down for a while. All 4 lights came on themselves. THat's why I wasn't getting the appropriate ip address.
