Problem - I am not able to get to sites. (IE - Google, etc.) I have asked some friends to check to see if the sites are down, but they are running fine - just not for me :(. I am able to get to other sites (IE - Yahoo).

    Recent changes to system :
--I ran AdAware for the first time, and I believe it may have deleted some files. Not sure if that would cause problems with getting to specific web sites though.

What I have done to look into the problem :
--I have tried pinging google (from start-run-ping google.com), ping was a success.
--I ran my Norton Virus Scan over my whole computer - found nothing.
--Downloaded Firefox (from Mozilla) - same problem on the different browser.

    I'm baffled :( ... Please have an answer for me ! :)

btw - it doesn't say "site blocked" or anything, it just keeps loading and loading - finally resulting in "The page cannot be displayed ".

Doug W--What versions of Windows and IE are you using?
The reasons and fixes for the problem are several.
Many of these fixes are still valid for WinXP.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q241344
Is this happening on all websites?
If so, here is another bunch of ideas
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326155
I would look into the Winsock fix as one of the first things to do.
    Or look here

If the above does not help, have you checked your hard drive for malware?

I assume you have an Antivirus program installed and set to start on boot and also AutoProtect.
If the above suggestions raise questions, please post back.

    1. Windows XP & IE ? .. not sure where to find that - I think it's 6.
    2. No, it's not happening on all websites. Google it what made me notice, as I use it frequently, but some links off Yahoo seem to not work either.

-- thanks for the responce, I'm looking into your suggestions now.

Doug W--If you can access some sites, then the problem is not your Winsock. So consider some of the other ideas, perhaps the one about a HOSTS file. You should look for an entry for google.com there. Or perhaps your proxy settings.
P.S. You find out what version of IE you are using, by clicking IE Help|About Internet Explorer.

I tried the online virus scan, it deleted some stuff - but didn't fix this particular problem.

I am looking into the HOSTS & proxy server possibilities now.

    My IE version is 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Also, it appears I may have been pinging wrong. Ping info (not sure if it helps, but just wanting to share any info I get) :

    ping www.google.com
    result : request timed out

    ping google.com
    result : success

    ping www.yahoo.com
    result : success

    ping yahoo.com
    result : success

    Thanks for your help

    More info :

I have also tried restoring my computer to an earlier date (pre-problem). This was no help either.

Edit : BTW - the above sites are working, also - the ad images from this site were also blocked, I'm getting them now as well.

This latest version of IE includes a pop-up blocker ....

Tools > Internet Options > Privacy

I prefer the pop-up blocker in the Google Toolbar - works well.
