Before i start, i'm an absolute beginner with computers, i'm a home user and that's about it..so please go easy on me, and forgive me if i don't provide sufficient information or posted this in the wrong section, i have read the posting rules..and i know they say 'dont post in XP setion just because your OS is XP' , but i wasn't sure whether or not it was a security issue or not. Thanks for reading my disclamer

RIGHT! All was fine and dandy when i went to look at my pictures, i then noticed a particular file was missing. I've used 'search' and it's not there. Ive done virus and spyware scans and i'm clean..then i got a message from sygate firewall saying:
    Somebody is scanning your computer.
    Your computer's TCP ports:
    *****, *****, *****, and ***** have been scanned from **.***.***.***.
i blocked the ports and IP address (which isnt mine!) for safety reasons..like i said im a beginner so i have no idea what im doing!
I also get a pop-up telling me to enter my e-mail address and password in.

What does all this mean? How can the problem be solved?

Any help, however constructive is appreciated. Thanks

ollyhtafc--I do not run Sygate's firewall.
    Here is what Sygate says
    http://smb.sygate.com/support/documents/spf/security_log.htm
However, I suspect this is information overload. If Sygate's firewall is doing its job, you should be protected and do not need to be told that Sygate is doing its job. There is probably a setting in Sygate to turn off these notices.

However, that popup asking you to enter your OE password is a little concerning and perhaps an entirely different issue.
Perhaps you should reconsider spyware. Some suggestions here

    email problem...

I have received the 'prompt' for my email user name and password before. This was usually caused by a problem connecting to the mail server. The problem usually lies with the mail server and if you wait awhile and try again the problem clears up. If the problem continues you may have to contact your internet service provider (ISP) to have the problem remedied. HTH

    Thank you for your help!
    One more thing however..

    Somebody is scanning your computer.
    Your computer's TCP ports:
    29935, 33876, 10627, and 13416 have been scanned from **.***.***.***

is the above normal? And where has my file got to

    Thanks again

What sort of file? details please! Is it an image file - i.e. one of your pictures or a program file.

If it is a picture file, probably a jpg you may have accidentally deleted it - look in the Recycle Bin for starters.

Most likely an informative message from Sygate - with which I am not familiar either. Indicates to me that Sygate is doing the job it's supposed to. Port scans are very common and most firewalls block the attempt. However some scans are considered 'low risk' and may be allowed.

Files/folders don't just go missing :) You've either inadvertently deleted it or moved it somewhere or hidden it!

    To satisfy your curiosity ....

In Windows Explorer go Tools > Folder Options > View and check 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Then search for *.jpg & *.gif on your drive and see if you recognise any of the files found.

Remember to change the option on hidden files and folders back to 'Do not show ....' when you're done.
