    Hi folks,

Recently got a problem with Windows Update in that it wont complete a search for new updates, the awful lime green progress bar just keeps churning away then displays an error message; 0x80072EE2.

I've tried every concievable tip given in the KB for this error but nothing will get it to run - any ideas?

I think this occured after it updated to v6, I have Zone alarm FREE installed and have tried this enabled and disabled but no joy - being the FREE edition i've no options for proxy settings etc.

    XP Pro SP2

    Start>Run
    type cmd
This will open a command window
    type
    ipconfig /flushdns

    Try again.

Post back if that doesn't help.

In "services" (Admin Tools) are BITS and Auto Update enabled?

    (It's an Alberto Vargas drawing...but there is some resemblance... :D :D )

    Johanna,

Auto update is off in windows - not sure where you mean about BITS in admin tools, nothing resembling that in there !

    Hello Mick,

not sure where you mean about BITS in admin tools
Start > run > type services.msc > ok. This will bring up the XP Services. Scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service and make sure its running and that the startup type is Automatic (under the Startup Type column).

While you're in there, make sure that Automatic Updates is also runing and the startup type is auto as well.

It doesn't matter if AU is disabled in the Control Panel > Security Center, as long as the AU service is running, manual updates should work.

    Regards - Charles

I've tried everything mentioned or linked on this thread, and yet, neither my computer nor my son's has access to windows update anymore. We use Kerio Personal Firewall. I'm not aware of any changes we've both made since the last time we used windows update. Any other suggestions?

    Hi All,

Same as Barry i'm afraid !

I've tried every suggestion/tip/KB but no joy - even re-installed XP ProSP2 - tried it with firewall on and off (zone alarm) NOT a dicky-bird !!

Well done Microsoft - can you get manual updates ??

I'm sure its this new v6 update software - you cant even revert back to the old version as the updater automatically updates to the new version !!

    Thanks everyone,

    Mick

    Hi Mick,

can you get manual updates ??
Another way to get to the Catalog site is from the normal update site's initial window: Left pane > click on "Use Administrator options" > main pane > "Update multiple operating systems" > click on "Windows Update Catalog ".

I can't believe you guys. I'm always amazed at how quickly you come up with simple solutions to problems that seem overwhelming at first. I just have one small addition to your solution. Click See Also Windows Update at the bottom of the left pane, and then it will automatically check your system, just like before Microsoft decided to play with their update process. Thanks for being there.

All is working well for me, other than I'm having a little glitch on one of my son's drives. His SP2 drive works fine, but his SP1 drive will show the upgrades available and allows him to choose what he wants, but when the download page comes up, nothing happens (no download). Any ideas what might be causing this?
