hi all, when i receive a newsletter it comes as an attachment IE:text/HTML i was always able to click on the attachment and it would open. now when i click on it i get a security warning pop up that says
do you want to save this file
    name-HTML
    type-unknown file type
    from- webmail optonline.net
with the options to save to disc or cancel. there is no option to open it.
i am using IE 6 service pack 2 . this is rather annoying having to save it to disc first. i was always able to click on the attachment and it would open. i have not downloaded any new updates or software..i have tried checking and unchecking options in the security section of internet explorer with no luck. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you paul spino

p spino-Have you looked at OE Tools|Options|Security tab|is the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened..." checked? If so uncheck it and Apply|OK. Sometimes these settings just change themselves.
If that does not help, you may have to right click on the attachment, Save, and open the saved file, even though you do not want the extra steps.
However are you saying the file type for these newsletters used to be indicated before, but now is not? That is a little strange. And makes me suspicious that this attachment may be malware. So I would scan with your antivirus before opening.
Also if you do not know the file type, it could be tricky to open. Right click on the Saved attachment (if you are convinced it is not dangerous)| Open With|and choose Notepad if you think it is a .txt file, IE if you think it is a .html file, etc. Or maybe Open With will figure out what program will open it by suggesting one.
I assume that in Windows Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View tab| "Show Hidden files and folders" is checked.

hi Welshjim yes do not allow attachments in outlook is un checked and show hidden files is checked.as far as the file be indicated before i don't know. i would click on it and it would open. i could live with the security message if there was an option to open it. if i right click it an try to open itthe same message pops up and i have to save it to disc first. i think like you said some setting has changed but i can't figure out which one.bythe way the news letter is from lockergnome and i just noticed i have the same problem with all news letters coming as html. thanks for the help
