I have just become aware that I have lost my XP task manager, I have tried to access it many times and it just does not start. What do I do. I recently had a problem uninstalling Limewire - a p2p file sharing program - perhaps it had something to do with my vanishing task manager.

    Still battling

It is very unlikely that I have a worm virus, I am and always are running Norton Antivirus 2005 with the latest downloaded (on a weekly or more oftem basis) as I said it is unlikely that I am infected with a worm virus. I preformed the checks that were advised to me on this site and on the microsoft site (the link supplied on this site) and if I had a worm virus it has now been eradicated (hopefully) but I still cannot start task manager, I visited kellys-corner website tried as few things there but still no luck perhaps all will be right when I reboot (which I am going to do after I have diconnected from the internet. I hope it all comes right!

Is taskmgr.exe in c:\windows folder or in the c:\windows\system32 folder. It should be in the system32 folder. Caution: If it is c:\windows, I would be asking myself why it's there and not being comfortable with that make sure this is the legimate taskmgr.exe and not some critter remnant, before trying something like simply moving or copying this to the system32 folder.

I see you have been directed to various patches located on kelly's site (related to policy issues) but how about having a look at the topic with a variety of issues listed and additional nfo:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm

Scroll down the page to section aptly entitled "Task Manager ".

What methods have you tried to get taskmgr.exe to run besides searching for and directly clicking on it?

Taskmgr.exe is in c\windows. Welshjim my previous operating system was win98 (it was illegal I upgraded to XP (its legal)

How to show system and hidden files... I suspect you haven't adjusted your settings and options........

    For Windows XP

    *Click Start.
    *Open My Computer.
*Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    *Select the View Tab.
*Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
*Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    *Click Yes to confirm.
    *Click OK.

Your system32 folder should be seen after this. After the adjustment, folder and file searches may be more fruitful. While your in the folder>view options you may wish to look the others over also. I find that I do like full paths used, do not cache thumbnails and I show all extensions. Various other things are user preference.

    -------------------
In thread #10, in response to a link Jim had sent you to, previously, in thread #8, you answered....
Does this mean you downloaded and tried the reg patch or you tried to run "regedit " and it would not open either? Does regedit run?

Nickynoo--It would seem a good idea to uninstall Incredimail. That way you can eliminate one variable that could be causing the problems. (FWIW--Several people seem to have problems with their PC after installing IM.) If Incredimail is not in Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs, here is some info that may help.
    http://www.google.com/search?source...,GGLD:2004-31,GGLD:en&q=uninstall+incredimail
P.S. How come you do not have a WinXP CD? With it you could run Start|Run|type sfc /scannow which often cures most WinXP problems since it replaces corrupt/old files with new ones.

To goddezzi - I am trying your suggestions, I mean that regebit will not run from my run command (on the start menu) if I use explorer to find it, I discover it is in the c\windows folder and if I double click on it I can run it from there - when I try to run it from the run command windows gives me an error message that it can run 16 bit programs - actual message is c:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
I'm then given two buttons Close and Ignore (both buttons seem to close the apllication.

To Welshjim - My WindowsXP installation is legal and I do have the original CD (the one I bought) I have tried the scannow thing but it takes 2 hrs to run and does not help (nothing changes).
I would like to uninstall IM but I need to download another email program from the net - a good one. Any suggestions?

OK folks I have been looking around.

I just looked thru the mentioned directory and I see no such file as REGEDIT.COM.

    .

    Taskmgr does not belong there.

That may well be the clue to the whole problem. If the upgraded did not go properly.

    Nickynoo

Question. How did you boot the machine to do the upgrade ?

Nickynoo--The more I read of your problems the more I think you should consider the procedure here
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37074
Do you maintain your PC regularly? Like run ScanDisk, perhaps Defragmenter, and delete your Temporary Internet Files? If not, you could try those first. But I have the feeling you have some baddies on your system, even though you have expressed doubt in an earlier post.

    Interesting developements

I have deleted my temporary internet files , I have run scandisk and am about to run defrag and sfc /scannow.

If I navigate to my taskmanager in my system32 folder and try and run it from there - I get an error message SAYING Another program is currently using this file --- very strange I have tried it when no programs are running.
I also brought up msconfig from the run menu and had a look at what is going on there - all the things or files or whatever in system.ini, win.ini, servicesand startup were not checked - I checked them all.
If I start my computer with the safeboot option - I am allowed to start my taskmanager. It will not work if I safeboot with the F8 key.
I have deleted all my accounts (2 of them) and only have my administrator account with the guest feature turned off - I was hoping that this would help but no. If I reinstall XP (I have and upgrade) will I have to reactivate it by phoning Microsoft (such a pain) - how do I go about the reinstallation? Do you think it will solve my problem?
