I am trying to remove references to my HP PrecisionScan LT and HP Copy Utility from the Event Window (the window that pops up prompting me to choose a program to launch when I press a scanner button for example). I no longer have that scanner and now have an Epson. I uninstalled the software for the HP but when I push the scanner button, the HP PrecisionScan and HP Copy utility are still listed as choices of programs to launch. I have done a search in the registry for any references to HP PrecisionScan and did remove a few but they didn’t solve the problem. More searches showed entries in the following path:

    HKEY Local _Machine>System>Controlset 001 >Control>StillImage>Events>STI ProxyEvent

    Under this STI ProxyEvent folder on the left are several entries (on the left) consisting of a long series of numbers and letters in brackets. For example: {C2EB04C4-86AF-AF60-80BB-7C1BC6FCA4F2}
There are about 9 of these long folder names on the left.

If I click on any of those series of long numbers/letters on the left, the right pane displays info about various software for peripherals I have, e.g. some have entries for my Canon Camera software, one for my Epson Scanner. 1 of those long series of numbers/letters show entries on the right for the HP PrecisionScan LT and another shows entries for the HP Copy Utility. My question is, can I delete the folder with the long numbers on the left if the right side seems to be only related to what I want to remove, or should I just remove each individual entry on the right pane. I hope I am making this clear. Thanks in advance for any help. I have already backed up my registry.

    Try these things:

    Open the registry key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

Remove any references in there to HP software

    then

Go to folder Program Files in Windows Explorer

Remove any folders for HP software. If it wont let you, ctrl-alt-del and end any processes that imply HP or precisionscan and try again. If still no luck go into Windows in Safe Mode (ask how if needed) and then remove them.

And finally go to these folders:

Note: before you do this step, you should remove ALL scanning software from the PC, including the new scanner.

    c:\Windows\Twain32
    c:\Windows\Twain
and remove any folders or files that reside under these folders
c:\Windows may also be called c:\Winnt.

If it wont let you remove the folders do the above stuff like going in in Safe Mode.

    Other things to try:

    > Also it wont hurt to try removing and re-installing your new scanner's
    software.
    > If at all possible try this:
-Remove the new scanner and all its software.
-Detach the new scanner from the PC
-Re-attach the old scanner, and re-install its software
-Restart the PC and remove the HP software with the scanner attached
    -Detach the old scanner
-Restart the PC and try putting the new scanner in again. Note with USB
scanners, it is best to install the software BEFORE attaching the scanner,
or when asked by its software installer.

I have already checked the registry in those areas you suggested and there are no references to the HP scanner software there; nor anything left in Program Files. I did install the new scanner software before connecting the scanner as instructed in the info with the scanner. I no longer have the old scanner. I am curiouse as to why reinstalling the new scanner software would have any effect on the already present HP PrecisionScan LT listed in the Events window. I was just wondering if anyone knew the answer to my original question about deleting those files I found in the registry. Thanks

Export the registry string (I note you have backed up the Registry, but easier from the restore point of view if you have a backup of the strings you delete) and give it a try as long as you are sure that the string refers to the software you want rid of.

A safer approach would be to use RegSeeker and search for HP PrecisionScan LT and HP Copy Utility and delete the references it finds - do ensure that the backup box is checked. You may possibly have to reinstall your new scanner software.

Thanks for the encouragement/reassurance. I did back up and then delete the strings (I deleted just the data in the right pane of the registry that mentioned my HP scanner software). That fixed my problem. The HP Scanner software no longer shows up in the Events window when I press my scanner Start button. Now I know where to go in case I run into this problem again. My scanner still seems to work properly. Thanks again.
