I have a user that installed Thunderbird email. He previously had Thunderbird email with alot of sub-folders, which were imported from Outlook. Everything worked fine, then. Now, after backing up emails, and upgrading to another computer, the Thunderbird application will not recognize any sub-folders under, about 3 levels, or so. Some copied over, but most did not. There is a variety of files with no extension, .msf, .snm and of course the folders .sbd. Many of the folders labeled .sbd periodically show files, periodically don't.

Does anyone know which proper files and/or folders need to be copied into which Thunderbird directory, so the profile will show all the emails in the application? (Oh yes, we setup the email with the "local" profile.) The version of Thunderbird is 1.0.2.

    http://its.uwrf.edu/support/apps/internet/thunderbird/subscribe.php
This link suggests to "subscribe to the missing folders ". Right click does not give this option. Goto File and Subscribe shows me an empty account, with nothing in the pull down menu.....?..... The account for the email did not show (i.e. xxx@hotmail.com) as it does in Netscape 7.x. The only email that shows is Local Folders with Inbox, Sent, and so on.

    Suzette,

Copy all files with no MSF extensions, including all SBD folders. Before copying SBD folders to the new PC, delete the MSF files contained in the SBD folders.

When installing Thunderbird, as the user elected to use the Global Inbox Setting, then no accounts will be listed in the left panel. You can change this, however and the instructions are here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox

As for the "subscribing" to the accounts, I believe that must be something that is proprietary to the LAN, or whatever your set up is there are the University. You need to check with the IT person in order to find out why you are getting no response when you right click.

    missing folders

    Hi Ramona:

I'm familar with the option to subscribe from Outlook, but not Thunderbird. I had experienced the "subscribe to a folder" when I was working with Outlook emails into Netscape. Which I was successful with. This feature does not apply to our server.

We copied the emails (with no extension) and the folders from an external IOmega drive into the profile directory xxxx.slt folder\mail\xxx.edu where all the other folders are. Some folders are either empty and/or emails are missing when we open Thunderbird. A question: Is there a limit to "sub-folders" within the email application?

    Suzette,

To the best of my knowledge there is no limit on Folders in Thunderbird. When you copied your subfolders (SBD folders) from the external HD, did you also delete the MSF files within these SBD folders?

MSF files within these SBD folders

Honestly Ramona...?...;( there were so many subfolders, that I did not think of removing those files. But it does make sense....;o) I will give that a try.

    Thank you....

Suzette, beware of Iomega. I used it what a bit, but when I needed it, it failed miserably.

    Thanks Westside

I've already found out that the missing files/folders reappeared when I powered down the unit. Only after an hour or more of constant use, the drive started flipping-out. Unfortunately I don't have a "say" in the products that most of my users, use. Unless they inquire with me for my opinion or past experience(s) which are many...........(I may have just given away my age.... )

There are other products that I would have recommended they use instead. LaCie external hard drives work wonderful, compact, huge, quick to install and no extra cables....;) is an example.

Any further suggestions for the missing/empty folders in Thunderbird?

    Thanks again.... :D Have a great 4th!!!!!

Let me say one thing: Thank you. Your question cleared up a mystery which I had. I could find nothing for my main profile, which is worst than what you have, but everything was, apparently, working normally.
In my case, only one of the four profile is in the right place. Don't ask me how this happened. Only Thunderbird knows, and it would talk.
Where would your folders be? almost anywhere. But, most important is to determine what path is used for the working profile. And, first of all I found that the TB1.02 profile was located in MyDocuments|New Office Files.
I was able to determine this from the Server Settings|Choose in Local Settings.
Yes, indeed there .sbd folderd by default. The way things are, I would , probably, not copy/paste the entire SBD folder, but only the file with no extention. I created, on purpose two subfolders, one of account inbox, and the other in Local folders, a subfolder of its Inbox. I start getting the hang of this, but, I surely, am not ready to tell you where your stuff is. As for the Subscribe, try
    this with pictures and all
. I have never done it this way, but it makes sense, with the TB craziness.
