I have been "moonlighting" on a board with much less experienced users (read: teenagers!) and a common problem seems to be the "auto reboot" XP has turned on by default. I need a list (Oh, how I love lists!) of ways to trick XP to get in long enough to shut off the auto reboot and get a useful error message.
    1. Safe Mode
    2. LKG Config
    3. Recovery Console? (Can you? How?)
    4. Booting from CD (how?)
    5. Clear CMOS??
    6. BIOS (How?)

Anyone else know any tricks? MS should disable that option by default to prevent the endless frustrating, seemingly-impossible-to-interrupt, reboot cycle...

    Johanna,

On both my desktops - XP SP 2 fully patched - hitting F8 on POST gives me, apart from the usual options, 'Disable automatic restart on system failure'. This is also true for Longhorn on one of the PC's.

Taking Pete's explanation and running the Quote passed google, this iw what came up:
    http://www.google.com/search?biw=77...restart+on+system+failure'&btnG=Google+Search

Looks like a few a suggestions could be found amongst these. Some have the how-tos already copyNpaste-able and many contain possible causes known to cause the initial reboot loop/occurance in the first place, with fix suggestions included in those. :)

As a side note and not mentioned, I know there has to be a way to merge the hkey and value that controls this setting ito the registry from the c: prompt. I just don't know the directions needed for this method off the top of head. It's probably not the best method, anyway, but as your making a list of all known ways, this would be another.
