Since i posted my page of fixes for this problem, my page has had over 73,000 hits from people looking for help. I hope i helped half the people who arrived there. Shame i am not a sponsored site with that traffic haha. And im not listed on any search engines either. No not planning to do anything like that, it is only a help page. Never had so many people look at one of my pages before though so its nice i am helping.

Please note over time i have made updates to the page to include new info, and every case i have had in my job of this problem has been solved by using one of the mthods i list.

The most common fix so far has been to set static IPs on each PC on the network, including the gateway field and DNS server settings. For more info (including illustration) on how to do this, see my page through the sticky post above.

    Thanks
    Happy Puting!

Of course you can overcome this problem also by having a properly set up DHCP server on your network. Typically DHCP server capabilities are built into routers, and most people have one of these if they have DSL or similar internet connections.

    no connectivity yet

I am new to this, so bear with me.

I am trying to connect my pc via a cable modem (mot SB5100) using Win XP Pro Sp2. My connection is direct, cable to network card (netgear FA311) in my pc, NO router. I get no connectivity. My receive light is steady, send light is blinking and online light is off.

I tried speaking to the Comcast tech services and they tell me my IP address indicates a router in my connection (192.168.100.11). Additionally, WIN XP detects a router or gateway in my setup. I am directly connected to the cable, no routers at all. I already did ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and I get the same thing.

What should I check in my setup? Is my NW card messed up? Or is it my modem? Or is it some config setting?

    PLease HELP!!

    still needing help with this

Do I use the same numbers as given in the illustration? If not where do I get the numbers from? I have been messing with this all day. Everything was fine until the other night when my computer did its automatic updates and then suddenly the "limited no connectivity" message appeared. I have been to many forums and have tried the patch from microsoft, the winstock fix, and changing the IP address and subnet mask. This fixes parts to where I have connection but I still cannot get on the internet or check email from my laptop. Help someone Please!!!!

Ok, I did just like the illustration. I have wireless connection but still cannot get on the internet.
