I keep getting annoying popups even with my popup blocker. I noticed that in the taskbar they all say CERES. I ran a search and was able to delete all the Ceres files except one CERES.DLL. I have run Ad-aware 6.0 and Spybot S&D 1.3 and neither get rid of it. Someone please help me get rid of this file and the annoying popups. Here is the hijjackthis log.

    Thanks
    Kristi

    Hello, welcome to the boards.
I edited your thread title to something much more descriptive.

    Disable System Restore.

Open HJT, and click on 'Open misc tools section', then click on "Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/Paste the following into it.

    C:\WINDOWS\CERES.DLL

Then click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select No at this time. Do the same for these.
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\nlnufr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SATMAT.exe

I have a question for you at this point, are you using Packager as supplied by Windows? If no or not sure what I mean, I have some dos commands for you to do. If you do use it, disregard the dos commands with packager in it. They only rename the file, and not delete it.

Rescan with HJT, and remove these items.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: CeresObj Class - {00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484} - C:\WINDOWS\CERES.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rvzkql] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\nlnufr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [satmat] C:\WINDOWS\SATMAT.exe
    O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\PROGRAM FILES\EBATES_MOEMONEYMAKER\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.ht m (file missing) (HKCU)

Now restart the computer with a boot floppy.

How to make boot floppy: Go to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, then click on Startup Floppy tab, or go to Bootdisk, and download the file for ME OEM. Doubleclick this file with a floppy in the drive, and one will be created for you.

Boot the computer with it, choose without CDRom support, and do these commands at the A:\> prompt.
    smartdrv
    deltree c:\windows\history
    deltree c:\windows\temp
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\packager.exe
    ren c:\windows\packager.exe packager.old

Type a Y that you want to delete, check for typos at his point. Take out floppy and reboot. Those deleted folders will be rebuilt.

    You can delete this folder.
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\EBATES_MOEMONEYMAKER

    You can enable System Restore.

Please post a new HJT log to see if you are clean.

    Packager as supplied by windows??

Sorry-that's a foreign language to me. I have no idea what that is.

    Thanks for the help
    Kristi

One more question- After I make the floppy, how do I "boot the computer" with it. I know I'm very computer illiterate.

Shut down the computer, insert the floppy into the drive and boot up the computer. The computer should boot from the floppy drive - you will see that the floppy drive light is on during this process.

On the off chance that your PC will not boot from the floppy you will need to go into the BIOS (hit Delete or F1 at startup - usually the POST screen will indicate ' Press XXX to enter Setup - BIOS) and check the Boot order. This should be CD-Rom > Floppy > Hard drive. To boot from a floppy this must come before the hard drive. You need either ....

    CD-Rom > floppy > hard drive (preferred) or Floppy > CD-Rom > hard drive.

You mentioned some dos commands earlier. Do I need to do that before I start?

    From markp62's post ....
The computer will boot to the A:\> prompt
    Type smartdrv > ENTER
Type deltree c:\windows\history > ENTER followed by Y to delete when asked and so on down the list

I put my instructions in the order I believe they should be done in my previous post.
There is another way to do the dos commands, as I fear you may see some "bad file name or command" appear on screen, and you will not have a clue what went wrong.
I have included a attachment here. When you download it, it may end up saved as Attachment.Php, rename it to Clean.Zip. When done correctly the icon will change to a Winzip icon, if you have Winzip installed.
Unzip the contents of Clean.Zip into the C:\Windows folder. Put the boot floppy into the drive, go to Shutdown, select Restart.
As the boot floppy is working, you will see a black screen with white letters on it. Use the arrow keys (mouse will not be working!) to highlight the choice for "without CDRom support" then press Enter. You will see a lot of things appear on the screen and go away, finally you will see A:\> appear. Type in CLEAN and press Enter.
This file will delete all the bad files for you.
You will see messages appear on the screen such as "Deleting C:\_Restore..." and so forth. When you see "All Done!" and the A:\> appear again, take out floppy and restart the computer by pressing the Reset button on the front of your computer.

I am not able to reboot using the boot floppy. I tried hitting F1 at startup and it just goes to a menu that says
    1-normal
    2-
    3-safe mode
    etc.

Nowhere to check the boot order. I think I have ******* the computer up now because it will not go back to normal mode. The icons on the desktop are huge and it can't change them.

I finally figured out how to boot the computer with the floppy. Here is the new hijackthis log.

I also figured out what was wrong with the desktop icons. Somehow the screen area pixels got changed.

Also, when it was deleting the bad files, two lines read "File not found - C:\windows\packager.exe. Don't know it that is important.

The good new, the stuff that was infecting is gone. But now you have something else.

    Download CWShredder.

Open HJT, and click on 'Open misc tools section', then click on "Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/Paste the following into it.

    C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Then click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select No at this time. Do the same for this.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTB.DLL

Rescan with HJT and remove these items.

Reboot, and then run the CWShredder.

You should go to RAV Online Scan, to see if there any other things present.
