Have you any web accelerator programs running?

I assume that you got the 4-5kbps speed indication when you were downloading something. Do you use a download client (like Getright) to download files? If so check its settings, and if it is set for 56k modem and not dsl.

Have you also noticed a speed decrease while general web page surfing in Internet Explorer?

...no web accelerator, no web client...just the IE v6. All i'm doing is installing SP2.....the speed does decrease while generally surfing the net after loging onto the computer..& so quickly...to a standstill!...do you have any ideas?... :)

I assume you have tried making the modem renew its lease (unplugging it for a few minutes, and rebooting) and that you have used the "repair connection" feature in XP. (Right click on the icon in the notification area)

It's time to call the ISP.

Maybe it is not SP2 related but maybe more a coincidence that it started at the time you put SP2 on. Sure it could be a file problem since the upgrade ,and i am not dismissing that, but your problem sounds more like something else is sucking up your bandwidth (like adware, viruses) or you have a service problem and are having what they call packet loss.

When you send or receive data on the net (or any network) it is sent in packets. The receiving computer involved says "got it" back to the sender, and the next packet is sent. If the packet is incomplete, it requests a resend, and the same packet is resent until it either gets there or times out.

When you have service problems, this packet loss can be so much it slows down things dramatically.

Now service problems, what do i mean?

    Could be:

    Your ISP

Your local phone exchange (anyone else you know in your area with same problem?)

You local phone lines (try different cables and points if possible)

Faulty line filters (Broadband only) Try replacing your line filters or unplugging every phone or fax on the same line as your internet

Also just thought it may be the software associated with your internet router/modem may have been affected by the SP2 update. Some internet connections are just plug it in an go (like static IP conns), but others require drivers for the modem/router or software to be run to set it up. try re-installing your internet connection from scratch. (i.e remove the old install first)

Anyway some ideas to try.....sounds like a job i coud do eaier on-site. Some things are hard to solve sight unseen.

    good luck
