    Hi there

I have a file sharing problem i cannot yet resolve for a client, that i havent encountered yet.

The 2 computers involved are a laptop running 98 and a PC running XP Home. From here on i will call the XP machine the "Host" (easier to write)

The Host is the one i want access to files on, from the laptop. When i try and connect to a shared folder or printer on the host, it asks me for a password. Problem is there are no passwords set on the Host for anything. It wont accept a blank password. I have tried this so far:

    >Set up an account on the host that matches the login details of the laptop
    >Tried setting passwords on both machines with no change in result
    >Tried disabling firewalls
    >Pinging the host, works fine
    >Swearing
    >Standing on 1 leg while rubbing my tummy

Also note the host is XP Home, therefore it only has Simple File Sharing and not an option to turn it off and on.

A doozy, hope you can help
    Thanx

I've seen the same thing. XP Home really is pants.

Have you tried creating another user on the XP PC and then setting a password for that user. Then connect as the new user.

Can't help you out on password access ... but take a look at the following download extension ....
FaJo XP File Security Extension (XP FSE)
Once installed, from an Explorer tree view, right click on target folder icon.
    Select Sharing and Security
From target folder Properties view, click on Security (XPFSE) Tab.
You now have an XP Pro Security settings.

And out the windows goes all the "good practice" advice of old. I hate XP Home. It's a pain in the posterior to network.

:) True that XP Home is more restricted networking, and i always use Pro on machines intended for networks, but i do get home PC users who got Home on thier PC when they bought it (not all my clients have bought PCs from me) and i must make do. I havent had this particular problem before.

To make it more fun i am trying to network a 5 year old laptop with 98 on it to a PC with Home.

I will check out the stuff replied here and see how i go, ill let you know if it works out and what i do to fix it. I am thinking that there is a software problem with the PC with Home, and i will be bringing that to my workshop to see how it networks with my Pro machine and take it from there.

    Thanks
