    Hi,
I am using Mozilla 1.7.8 on XP Home with SP2.

When I receive an email with a url in it, how can I click on it and access Firefox instead of Mozilla browser? I have Firefox set as my default browser. Would this work in Thunderbird?
    Thanks,
    Ken

If you have Firefox set as your default browser, then clicking on a link in Mozilla Mail should open Firefox, and not Mozilla. Check these settings in Mozilla: Advanced | System settings. Uncheck/disable HTML Documents, HTTP, and HTTPS. If you those settings are correct, then try this:

Setting Firefox as default browser manually

In Windows XP, go to "Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults (on the left) -> Custom" and set Firefox as your default browser. If that doesn't work:

Go to "Start -> Settings -> Folder Options -> File Types" and assign the following things to Firefox:

    URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
    URL:protected HyperText Transfer Protocol
    URL:File Transfer Protocol
    HTML File
    HTM File (optional)

If you designate Thunderbird as your default Mail Client, then clicking on a link in Thunderbird will open Firefox. That is the setup I use, and no problems.

    Thank you, Ramona.

I have been considering going to Thunderbird for some time but wanted to get Mozilla straightened out first.

    A couple of questions:

    1. Earlier when I looked at it, I noticed that there was no integrated Help with Thunderbird as there is with Mozilla. Is there any plan to integrate Help? All I could remember finding was some Q &A's Or did I miss something?

    2. Has Thunderbird made any improvements in the DB handling of the lists in the Address Book? I have had some problems with managing lists in Mozilla.

    3. What are the improvements in Thunderbird over Mozilla 1.7.8?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    4. What do I do to migrate from Mozilla 1.7.8 to Thunderbird?

    5. Would Junk mail training migrate from Mozilla 1.7.8 to Thunderbird?

    Ken,

Actually the Help Page that you are given is quite good: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/
This link also includes additional links to FAQ, a Tutorial, Tips & Tricks, etc.

Another good resource is the Mozilla Thunderbird Knowledge Base:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mozilla_Thunderbird

As to whether or not there will be integrated Help in Thunderbird, I haven't heard anything yet... That doesn't mean there won't be, however.

As far as the differences in the Mozilla Suite Mail and Thunderbird, there is little difference. There is a small learning curve with the Preferences, but you will soon get the hang of the different format. No change in lists that I can see, altho I use them infrequently.

I now prefer the standalone Mail Client. No need to shut down Mail if you want to restart your browser, and in fact, that works both ways. There are the RSS feeds for News, which is a nice improvement. Keeping in mind that the Mozilla Suite ended with Version 1.7.8. A small group of independent developers are now working on Seamonkey, which hopefully will be a continuation of a suite.

When you install Thunderbird, you are given the choice to migrate your Profile information from other applications. Here is a Thunderbird KB Article which covers the migration:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Migrate_from_Mozilla_Suite_or_Netscape_to_Thunderbird

Your Junk Mail would definitely migrate, as the training.dat file is located in your Mozilla *.slt folder, and contains the Junk Mail rules for the Bayesian filter.

Fire away if you have more questions.

    Hi Ramona,
I migrated from Mozilla 1.7x to Thunderbird with no problems. Working well after a few days :) Thank you.

My wife is on XP also and is still using Netscape 4.74 and I am planning to migrate her Netscape system to Thunderbird (she already uses Firefox).

When I install Thunderbird, will the mail get moved over like it did for Mozilla?
I think I have to export Address Book from Netscape 4 and import into Thunderbird? Anything else?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Ken,

I'm glad the migration went smoothly for you, and that's always good to hear!

Yes, you will have the choice of browsers, just as you did with Mozilla in the original install on your wife's Toshiba.

Yes you will need to export Communicator's Address Book as an LDIF file, then save to the HD. Then once Thunderbird is installed, import the LDIF file on the HD to the new Address Book.

Let us know if you have further questions.

BTW, as I just advised another member, Firefox 1.0.5 and Thunderbird 1.0.5 will be released in the near future. I wouldn't care to guess an exact date, but the Test Beta of 1.0.5 has been released. You might want to wait on Thunderbird 1.0.5. Or not...

I have been using nightlies of Thunderbird1.0+ or whatever they call it. It will, eventually come out as TB1.1.
I like the features a lot. Supposedly spoof controls (never saw it in action), and a neat spellchecker.

    Ken,

I'm glad that we could give you the help you needed!

    Westside,

What does the new spellchecker do that the old one didn't? I thought the current spellchecker was pretty good, but then I'm easy.
