I am upgrading to XP Pro from 2000 pro and have encountered a problem.

The installation tries to copy a number of files to my hard drive. When this occurs I get a "Copy error" with the message "setup cannot copy the file _______ ". On repeated tries various file names appear. These files are located in the I386 directory on the install cd. When you browse to that location, the file in question appears but it won't copy.

Does anybody know what is going on?

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Thanks Steve.

I gave that a try but could not find any specific articles related to my problem. Any other ideas?

    Could be:

    1) Your computer has a problem reading from the section of the CD containing this data, try another CD if poss.

    2) Your CDROM is faulty, try another CDROM

    3) You had updated Wndows 2000 with an update or program that has left newer versions of certain shared files that are on the XP install CD, on your disk and setup cannot overwrite them.

I always recommend upgrading OS by doing so on a formatted hard disk with nothing on it at all. Even f you succeed in upgrading over the top of the previous windows, often you will inherit problems doing it this way, and it never runs as cleanly or fast as a fresh install.

So i suggest back up your data, format the drive and install from zero. If you have an upgrade version of XP, simply supplying the win 2000 CD when asked will prove you qualify for the upgrade version, it doesnt have to be installed to be accepted.

    Hope this helps

Most likely problem is reading the CD during installation. It could be a speed issue or just not reading correctly.

Try copying the i386 folder onto the hard drive and then run the installation from there. That might fix the problem.

The advantage of doing an upgrade from Win@K is that other programs and settings are retained and do not need to be installed again.

Well - I thank everyone for their suggestions. I'm on my second installation cd, so chances are it's not a bad cd. I have copied the I386 directory to the hard drive and installation still won't copy the various files.

I have exhausted my limited knowledge along with these timely suggestions - it appears that the only way to accomplish this now is to re-format the HD and start from scratch.

    Thanks again,

    Matt
