o/s is windows 98se have my antis (anti virus, spybot etc)

is there? a limit on icons on desktop or on favorites(which i use because i forget where i was, you know short-term memory loss) and i delete them when not needed. i had one poor little browser that took one look at my favorites and said basically,no way!

the reason that i am asking is that my connection is about half of what it should be, i had the cable co. out today, wires are okay and they thought possibly the items i had in quick launch was holding it back. but didnt say anything about icons on desktop and didnt see favorites. okay what i am trying to ask is this. could my favorites and my icons slowing connection speed down that much? i've used 2 wire, testmynet, and toast.net that isnt a commerical. or should i just leave it alone cause its faster than dial-up?

I can't say anything about Icons on the Desktop as I only have three.

My Favorites are grouped into folders and in the Menu above the Start Button. I just started to count them and gave up at 50.

I have at least 15 items down in the Quicklaunch. As far as I know these should not bother unless some of them are actually running in the background.

I have 8-10 items over in the Systray.

I would venture a guess that you may have too much running in the background.

I just looked at my Wifes 98SE machine and she has 20 or more Icons on the Desktop. Her Favorites and Toolbar are set up the same as mine.

A shortcut icon on the desktop is not a program running in memory, unless you load the program it starts by doubleclicking it.
About Quicklaunch, the same as above, as mentioned by BillyBob.
What will take up your bandwith (slow you down) is items running in memory that are accessing the internet. Do you have a firewall running?
As far as I know, you have a hidden warez server running on your machine.
About using online connection speed testers, remember you are not always going straight from your computer to theirs, your signal could go from Kansas to California and then back to Virginia before it gets back to you, and thus report a slowdown.

billybob, thanks for answering so fast, i have 20 running processes according to adaware and 8 according to close programs(including windowbbs). i have only the show desktop icon in quick launch and in systray i have six, really four since when i click on both dr watson and yahoo messenger they join the group in systray. i checked with help and no where did it state that if you put programs on quick launch it will slow down your connection speed.

is there a way to see how many programs you have running? using adaware and close programs was the only way i could think of.

    ran speed test..2wire 798.4kbps
    toast 1716kbps
testmynet 1560kbps or 40%host average ( host says up to 3mbps) so what do you suggest? like i said its faster than dial-up!
