I'm building up a WIN98SE system for testing of S/W I am developing. Going slow with adding Application S/W amd testing. So far I have installed WIN98SE and all the updates. Installed a LEXMARK 600 Printer driver and NVDIA Driver for the GeForse 4 MX440 display adapter. No Problems at all. Downloaded and installed the latest NORTON 2005 AV and installed it. Now when the system is rebooted it pauses and is busy 100% for up to 10 minutes. Mouse is ineffective, keyboard does not seem to work, etc. After the delay 5 - 10 inutes there is a flurry of disk activity and everything is OK!. One of the times I was able to do a CTL-ALT-DEL and the dispay indicated the a ddhelp.exe was not responding. After the delay the ddhelp.exe was not displayed when I did the CTL-ALT-DEL.

This is really weird?? The system has not been on the internet yet so its not adwaye or other malicious code.

Any Help would be most appreciated..

    Thanks

would try uninstalling Norton's and see if that makes any difference. If so, suggest AVG instead.

    sparrow,

    Thanks for the suiggestion.

I did one better. I set Norton so it did not start on Windows load. That solved the problem. I can start AutoDetct on Norton after system is up and running and everything seem to be OK. This is really a strange problem. Maybe someone else will have a solution so I can launch it at startup.

Only problem with that is in case you've got an always-on web connection, and if so lots of things can come into your computer in one second. Better have a firewall that can lock out the web until the AV is running, as zonralarm can.

I have sold Nortons products for many years. I now mainly sell Kaspersky though as Nortons is problematic on networks.

I found any version of Nortons after 2003 runs horribley on windows 98 or me and i dont recommend using it on this unless you must. I would upgrade from 98 as this problem will occur more and more as software developers abandon supporting 98 or caring about it. AVG is good at finding viruses but terrible at removing them, hence it is free.

Thats the difference between good and not so good antiviruses, most will detect viruses, but the good ones will do a better job removing them.
